Second gear jolt

86 2.8 Camaro.

I've had a jolt going from first to second for probably 2 years. This car doesn't get driven much. But I've finally had time to work on it.

I changed out the transmission filter and put all new fluid. Tightened up all the lines. No leaks.

The jolt went away for about a week. Shifting like brand new. Yesterday It came back. The fluid was low so I added a bit more and it went away again but came back again this morning.

Anything less than a rebuild I might be able to do?

Re: Second gear jolt

I would maybe try some of the additives or conditioners they put out and cross your fingers a while. It may run a while like that..

Well it has been running like that for a long time. Maybe I should just be happy it didn't fall apart when I changed the filter and fluid.

Re: Second gear jolt

It's been a while, but IIRC, the 2nd gear accumulator spring likes to break. It is an easy fix.

Does it involve dropping the pan again? How could I tell if it broke?

Re: Second gear jolt

Yes, need to drop the pan. The 2nd accumulator is in the right rear corner of the transmission. Can tell if the spring broke by the number of pieces that fall out. One piece and it's OK, more then one, it broke.

No parts fell out when I dropped the pan before. It is still coming and going. When I first leave the driveway it jolts but the last couple of stop lights once I get halfway to work it shifts smooth.

Re: Second gear jolt

Ever adjusted your t.v. cable? Mabye it's out of adjustment, causing your jumpiness.

I have adjusted it before but I didn't it know it had anything to do with the transmission. I just watched a youtube video explaining to make sure it is at full throttle?

Re: Second gear jolt

The t.v. cable is for your shift points and needs to be correctly adjusted.
Push in the tab on the side of the mount, slide back the black plastic part as far as it goes, release the tab, then turn the throttle to WOT until it hits its end stop.
That's basically your adjustment.
If out of adjustment, your transmission may shift into second gear only in high rpms even in slight acceleration conditions and it may ultimately kill it :/
