700r4 low and high rpm shifts

So bear with me here, ive seen posts with similiar problems but not the exact. Some days my transmission will shift at very low rpm's, i hit 4th around 40mph and the shifts are extremely smooth. ( i call this a good day) On a bad day its shifts into every gear around 4,000 rpms, the shifts are hard and i don't get 4th gear. Maybe because at like 3,600 rpms im already doin 90ish so ive yet to hit 4,000 in 3rd. My transmission instructor's first guess was the pressure regulator, i'm thinking pressure regulator spring? I'm open to any and all opinions any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 700r4 low and high rpm shifts

I was gonna order a new pressure rwgulator spring, grind down the first land on the valve as ive seen donr, and order this kit from probuilt. https://www.700r4l60e.com/store/prod...&cat=52&page=1 just wondering if this will take care of it

Re: 700r4 low and high rpm shifts

Could also be a sticking governor valve.

I thought about that as well but whenever i search for it on any parts store sites (advance, auto zone, etc) it always tells me no parts found

Dont need a new one, can gently tap all around it with the back of a screwdriver by making sure the plunger moves freely.

Re: 700r4 low and high rpm shifts

Well i had the governor off a while ago, couple months ago, and when i did the valve was hanging so i cleaned it good and reinstalled it. It was still just barely sticking but i figured fluid pressure would assist it

Sounds lika all you need is a screwdriver. And if it is still binding and you need a replacement, you will probably have to transfer the weights and springs to the new replacement.

Re: 700r4 low and high rpm shifts

Can i take it apart to clean the valve off and put it back together without a rebuild kit? And also when its shifting at high rpms and i dont have 4th, when im in 3rd and let off the rpms drop as if its in neutral. Im worried that thats clutches or bands slipping.

Re: 700r4 low and high rpm shifts

I'm not a tranny guy by NO means. But does temps outside have an affect on it's shift points? Cold weather, higher points....warm weather, lower points?? Just curious

That's kinda long to wait for it to shift into forth for sure! Maybe an additional 5-10 seconds, but not minutes!

Other problem then.

Re: 700r4 low and high rpm shifts

After all it sounds like you may need at least a magical screwdriver

I would inspect the VB at your place, to start with.
