3.73 gears no power
I want to start by saying Im new to the camaro and to this form, I have some automotive back round but I have a lot to learn.
Here is my problem, I have a 92 camaro 305, 700R4. I hate the open diff and thus put posi in her I used a eaton detroit truetrac. A old friend of mine said I should put 3.73 rear gears in since I was in there and so I did. also while I had the car off the road for the winter I rebuilt the trans with a TCI master rebuild kit, I also put a beefed up s10 torque converter in. For its first run it drove around town kinda normal but after more driving I found it takes for ever to get up to a resalable speed and fails to get up to a high top speed. I know the motor is old and week but I expected a lot more then that. before I did any thing she would lay a little rubber and put you back in ur seat hard, now I dont think I could keep up with a stock civic. where did my power go and y is she slow (I had the trans on a dyno and she tested fine) I almost feel like I should have put taller gears in not shorter but I don't know and I miss my power. please help I do love this car and I hate to see it going so slow.

My guess would be the torque converter. Put your stock converter back in and see what happens. If you don't have a larger cam, bigger headers, single plane intake manifold or a large carb then you probably don't need the higher stall speed, and it might be making the car feel weaker than it is.

Yeah, I second the torque converter idea.
The deeper gears will always give you more punch starting off and most always get you to speed faster.

Deeper gears make loose converters act tighter, so I think you were on the right track, but even the L35 converter is already not very loose. I'd say to invest now in something like a 2400-2600 stall lockup converter. One that's balanced and furnace-brazed. Cost will be around $300, but the fun will be worth it.

Re: 3.73 gears no power
ok so I have done some looking around and I think you all are right its the converter. I'm guessing it stalls at about 3000RPM but that's a rough guess. The reason I changed the converter is because the car was unpredictable sometimes off a take off I would hammer down and she would smoke the tires and take off. Other times I would go hammer down and she would go but slow really slow and wouldn't even spin. So.... thought the converter was shot, thus I bought a new one and thus I don't have the old one. I do have a Boss Hog Night Stalker Torque Converters that I put in my old s10 before I twisted the frame, I think this is the part #48441 but I cant find the info on it it was ether that one or the 48440 any way there stall speed is no higher than 2200 do you all think it would work better? I dont have any money felt at this time.

Re: 3.73 gears no power
A 3000 actual stall speed is going to make the car feel like it has to rev a lot to get going.
If the car drives strong, but only feels like it pulls hard when you nail it, that converter may be a mis-match to the engine. 3.73 is a good gear with a stock high-stall (S10 4.3, Vette) but 3.42 tend to better match the L03 and LB9 powerband.

Re: 3.73 gears no power
well I have 3.73 with a s10 converter that has been beefed up but the car is slower than when the trans had 150k and was slipping. I have a boss hog that I bought that I put in my s10 im going to try that converter in the camaro cuz its my only spare at this point and I'll see what is dos. I have no clue of the stall speed in that though so its a total shot in the dark. and I'm out of money for a bit.

With 3.73:1s and a 3000 stall, and not using both feet, flooring it from a dead stop should result in twin black stripes on the road. If not, then that's a clue.

Re: 3.73 gears no power
if i just take off from a stop it sometimes chirps but no lines I need to hold the brake and build up to 3k rpms then let go to get lines and even then they fade fast I only get 10ft of line. however if I stay with my foot to the floor when she shifts 2nd she will chirp and wiggle a little but that is at 6k rpms and the trans is build like crazy with a huge boost valve.
cosmick........... A clue to what?

Re: 3.73 gears no power
well Idk what fixed it but I did put a stock stall cover back in when I changed my motor (out with the 305 and in with a 350) and the car is grate now. I do think it was the converter however I have no proof.
