Change gear ratios T5
I've searched and can't seem to come up with anything.
I know it's possible to swap the 5th gear fairly "easily" in a T5, but can the other gears be changed also?
T5 transmission are very difficult to come by here in Arizona and I have been looking to get a V8 T5 for my 91 305 camaro that the previous owner put a NWC V6 t5 in (original manual car so must have broke the tranny). I eventually want a T56, but don't have the money to get the total swap now, and finding all the parts here has come up with nothing (I've been searching for both T56 and t5s for the past 4-5 months)
Anyways, my friend and I found a WC v6 tranny from an 89 at a junk yard for $129 which is a decent price for a tranny, and it will be a WC when mine is currently a NWC.
However, the gear ratios on these will be the same or possibly worse than my current T5.
I figured, if I get it, I would do a rebuild, and if I was rebuilding it, I could change the gears to better suit what I wanted. I haven't found any info on what's available to swap for the first gear on T5 v6s, so if anyone knows what gears can go in there I would love to know!

Re: Change gear ratios T5
All other gears must be swapped as a complete set. The counter gear (1st, 2nd and 3rd) is 1 piece, so none of it's gears can be changed. The mating gears also must remain the same to work with the counter gear. 4th gear is always 1:1. 5th gear can be removed from the counter gear, so the 5th gear ratio can be changed.

Oh okay, I suppose that's why I couldn't find info on changing other gear ratios besides 5th!
Thanks for the info by the way! It sounds as if it's not worth getting the transmission then because I bet getting the counter gear would cost much more than the transmission at the junk yard. If anything, I may just swap my 5th gear in my current transmission until I can find a better T5 or get lucky and find a t56 with all the needed parts.

The gears to change it over will start at $500, not including either 5th. What teeth do your 5th gears have? I can tell you what 5th will be with the V8 gearset. Or if you know your current tag number, what options there are.

Re: Change gear ratios T5
Unfortunately the tag on my transmission wasn't on when I took a look at it.
When I first got the car, I has some issues where I thought maybe my throwout or pilot bearing were going bad. It ended up that the previous owner(s) installed this V6 T5 with only 2 of the 4 bolts, so it was hanging at an angle.
The pilot shaft was damaged beyond repair. The pilot bearing was completely gone which wore a huge section of the shaft out, but I had a local guy replace and shim a new one, as well as check some other stuff out. I didn't think to ask him what my ratios where though because this was back when I first got the car...
My rear axle was swapped to have a 3.23 ratio, and my current tires are 225,50,16. So with that I think my fifth gear is .78. I also think I have the 4.03 first gear.... It makes it easy to do burnout which is kinda fun (I almost never do because I don't like replacing tires), but it's such a short gear for my setup.
I really like the way it feels in fifth, but I do want to get better mileage because I run around 2200-2600RPM at highway speeds (65-73MPH), which I would think is hurting my highway mileage quite a bit. Also, about 75% of my driving is done on the highway too...
