Need advice on buying a car with trans problems

Apparently 3rd gear and reverse don't work but everything else does. Id assume id have to either rebuild or replace the transmission. how much will this put me back to get it rebuilt or is it an easy replace with other trans?

Should be in the $1200 - 1500 kind of ballpark.

Transmissions are a bit like nuclear power plants or hospital operating room equipment; not something you automatically go to the low bidder for, like say corn or gasoline. I'm hoping you haven't already bought the car, like so many others who come in here and expect us to somehow bail them out of a big mistake; if you haven't already bought the car and are looking for a valuation, whatever the car would be worth if it was 100% working, deduct $1500 from that, that's what it's worth now. If that works out to a negative number, then it's a parts car, and you need to pay no more than parts car price for it no matter what else. ($300 - $500 might be a rough guess)

Looking at where you are, I'm guessing Buffalo or Jamestown or Rochester or some such, RUST is going to be an issue. If the car BOTH needs a transmission AND has rust damage, you don't want it. PERIOD.

Doesn't matter whether it's a Camaro/Firebird, a Mustang, a RX-7, a truck, a Civic, WHATEVER... the same rules would apply.

yeah i havent bought the car yet but everything else seems to be in good condition and the owner is asking for 2500. Ive decided its too much of a project for me and would rather find one in a better condition

If it is 2nd & 4th gears that are gone including reverse, then the sunshell has failed. You need to do a test drive with someone you trust that knows transmissions if you cannot figure it out on your own. Replacing the sunshell is easy for a transmission builder. The GM heat treated sunshell is less than $40.00. Just a thought.
