9 bolt LSD change

I just picked up a 1989 GTA it has a 9 bolt with 3.27 gears and a LSD. Upon inspection of the differential with pressure on one wheel I can rotate the wheel that has no pressure with ease. It also has the axle seals and housing where leaking bad.

So i picked up another 9 bolt off craigslist that the lSD locks up and can barley move the one end with pressure on the opposite axle. The axle i picked up is 2.77 gear.

My question is should I install new bearings or do you think I can get away with the bearings that are on the craigslist one. I am already going to axle bearings and seals is there anything else I should consider when doing this change.

It's not going to work. The 2.77 gear fits a 2 series differential and the 3.27 gear fits a 3 series differential. You can't install the 3.27 gear on the differential that came out of the 2.77 rear end.

No good. Well back to square one do you think if the gear oil had been changed without friction modifier that once I add some that it will work better

Re: 9 bolt LSD change

There are several threads on here about reconditioning the LSD in the 9 bolt. Check them out. Changing the oil probably won't help.

That's the road I am going down now. Can I use the Cones and spider gears from the 2.77 rear?

Yes, if they are better than what came out of the 3.27 rear end.

Re: 9 bolt LSD change

Thanks for all the help will see if I can get this done this weekend. Here is a pic of 3.27 cone completely bottomed out. I don't know if anything is messed up yet but my guess would it's probably not good.
