I have a 2500 stall on my 700r4 and was wondering if it needs a tranny cooler, or if it is good enough connected to the radiator.
I have a brand new radiator from summit.

Any converter higher than stock stall needs an additional cooler. The trans cooler inside the rad can only remove so much heat.

Higher stall means the converter is slipping at the lower rpms. Slippage makes heat. Heat kills transmissions.

A stacked plate design is better than tube and fin design.

IMHO any car used for any type of sprinted driving with an auto trans should have an external trans cooler..

Add in higher stall converter, any type or amount of racing, high HP engine, higher engine loads, heavy towing, etc, etc and the size of the external cooler needs to go even bigger.

I run 2 external trans coolers on my camaro and 1 on my V8 S10.

Heat is the #1 killer of auto transmissions

What is the rear ratio? And, do you have the 700/converter wired to lock only in high gear. If you cannot maintain above the converter stall speed on the street you will run warm - converter will slip as it is supposed to. A good radiator will keep the tranny warm and cool it enough to not worry about temps.. Extreme street performance excepted.... If you are concerned about the temps you can always run a gauge on the tranny return line. Byron

3.23. It runs 60mph at 2,000 rpm and 30-35 really low at 1600 or so. In OD. Should I be more concerned on high way or slower driving?

What is a good cooler? I am having troubles finding one on summit/jeggs.

I like the stacked plate design better, they work better. Like the B&M super coolers

Where you mount the cooler is important. You want as much airflow as you can get so most mount there's somewhere in front of the radiator/condenser. Also where it's placed in the transmission line plays a roll. I installed mine after the stock cooler. I simply thought the larger cooler would do most of the work then the smaller would finish the job.

The converter is going to slip at any of the speeds/RPMs that you mentioned. The street driving will raise converter/tranny fluid temps more than the highway. My suggestion is to make sure you are locking in at highway speeds, run a temp gauge then make your decision on the cooler. The top line goes to the top of the radiator inlet, bottom line is the return. There has been much discussion on where and when to place the cooler. Some say before the radiator, some say after. Wherever you place it, you need to have a good flow of air across it. Keep in touch as you progress, it will interesting and a good read. B

Ally, why do you say pan? On one hand that seems to make sense, but on the other, wouldn't you want to know the temp going into the trans? Although, the return line should be about the same as the pan - probably a bit higher? Safety edge? Thx b

I will probably purchase the super cooler thanks everyone.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I think the video game Gta5 is has the camaro/firebird with the option to have the tranny cooler mounted outside the vehicle. Which is interesting.

Do you fill it with coolant like a mini radiator?

No... You do not put coolant in it. It is an air exchanger. Just like a radiator...
With a rad. you 'put' coolant in it, water pump pushes water through it and air blows through the fins to cool the coolant down.

With a trans cooler, you just hook it up to your transmission cooler lines, and the trans pump inside the transmission pumps ATF into the cooler.... Air flows through the fins of cooler to cool down the ATF.
