Strange 12 bolt and Timken Set20 bearings

I bought a new Strange 12 bolt with a spool and 35 spline axles. I got rid of the spool and had a Wavetrac differential installed and had to get longer axles from Strange. The axles came with Timken Set20 tapered roller bearings installed on them.

I am installing a Wilwood Dyanalite brake kit, when I install the axles, caliper brackets and bearing retainers it preloads the bearings. They are so tight I cannot turn them unless I use a prybar. The tech people at Strange and Moser were not much help. I am not sure how much preload if any the bearings should have, and how to obtain it.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Strange 12 bolt and Timken Set20 bearings

Are the calipers floating or fixed?

Get an answer from Stranger on this: what range of pre-load is okay on the tapered bearings?

Re: Strange 12 bolt and Timken Set20 bearings

There are a few different housing ends that you could have. One has the bearing assembly sticking out of the housing 1/8 inch and another has the bearing assembly flush with the housing.

If your bearings stick out 1/8 inch then your caliper brackets must have a 1/8 inch counter bore on the back side. If your bearings are flush then the caliper brackets must be flat on the back side.

Your tapered roller bearings will have the seal on the outer side of the bearing, so the seal is part of the assembly.

Re: Strange 12 bolt and Timken Set20 bearings

I have the big ford ends on the housing. The wilwood brake kit is P/N 140 -7139. The calipers are fixed, and the axle and bearing wll pass through the caliper bracket. The bearing is retained by a horse shoe retainer that is flanged on one end to make up the difference in the thickness of the caliper bracket. When I torque the retainer to 35 ft lbs, it preloads the bearings too much.
The tech from strange was no help. The tech from Moser said I had the wrong caliper bracket, he said I should have the counter bored bracket. I have been unable to get in touch with wilwood yet. I was just hoping someone might have dealt with this already. Thanks for your replies.

I think I would agree with the person from Moser and say that you have the wrong bracket for your application. I'm surprised that someone from Moser would offer any help for a Strange rear end. You must have caught him on a good day.

Here is something else to consider. Your axles might be too long and causing the retainer to lock up the axle when you tighten it.

Re: Strange 12 bolt and Timken Set20 bearings

I did not tell the moser tech it was a strange unit, I asked them because they sell all the same components.
When I ordered the axles I told strange everything I had. These were the axles and bearings they sent. If it takes the counter bored caliper brackets, they would have to go on the axles before the bearings, right?
I had thought about the axles being to long. How would I check for that? Is there something in the center of the wavetrac that they would press against?
Thanks

Re: Strange 12 bolt and Timken Set20 bearings

I haven't had my hands on a Wavetrac, so I don't know if there is anything in the center. You should be able to put the axles in the housing and see if the bearings seat in the housing ends. You could measure the depth of the bore in the housing end, measure the thickness of the bearing, and then put the axle in and measure the distance that the bearing sticks out of the end to see if it's going in all the way.

You can also run a tape measure into the housing until it hits the center of the Wavetrac and measure to the seat of the axle bearing bore and then measure the axle to see if the axle length is correct.

You were right bgh, the axle was to long. Shortened it an 1/8 inch and it went together as it should.
