How important is it to disconnect driveshaft when dolley towing? Going 1400 miles.

Depends on how much you want your transmission to work when you get there.
Seriously, DS installed turns the main shaft. You'll be in neutral whichever tan you have. For manual, neither the input nor (more importantly) counter shaft will be turning to move the oil to lubricate everything. The bearings will spin dry, then hot, then gall and fail. Auto is similar; without the TC turning the oil pump, no oil flow, dry bearings, burnt trans.

Never realized that's the reason your not supposed to flat tow em, but when you put it that way it's probably best to take the 5 minutes it takes to pull the shaft.

Don't forget to plug the tailshaft so you don't leak a bunch of oil, especially with the nose up position!
