Transmission won't mate to bellhousing

Putting the T5 back in my car...everything worked smoothly, until it came time to install the transmission back into the car. I can't get the transmission to pull in the last quarter inch or so to mate with the back of the bellhousing. It's so close, I can't put my little finger between the transmission and the bellhousing..but no amount of pushing, lifting, or rotating the transmission seems to allow it to move in that last quarter inch.

It would seem that it's the pilot bearing that's holding up the works, since it's that close..but after spending several hours, I'm stumped.

Suggestions?

Re: Transmission won't mate to bellhousing

Had the same issue with my T5 and ended up tightening the four bolts which pulled it into place. I alternated the bolts I was tightening so it wouldn't bind but it did slip in there. I also had to mess with the throw out bearing and fork to get everything to line up.

Re: Transmission won't mate to bellhousing

Got it in without pulling the bolts.. Installed the rear mount, and driveshaft, put my floor jack under the rear mount, with the jack aligned north-south, so it could roll easily forward or backward. Got my son to push forward on the transmission, using the driveshaft, while my wife pressing in the clutch, and me at the front of the transmission guiding it into the bellhousing.

Slid right in.

Re: Transmission won't mate to bellhousing

while ... pressing in the clutch
That's the key, right there. Works every time.

tightening the four bolts which pulled it into place
For those who come after, searching for help with this, DO NOT DO THIS!!!! This is WRONG with a capital R! It is the best way I can think of to break off the ears of your transmission, turn your nice flat new $$$ clutch disc into a bowl, ruin the pilot bearing/bushing, and otherwise DESTROY stuff.

Use the method of having your assistant (either sex will do, marital status is irrelevant) push the clutch while you push the trans into the BH.
