84 700R4

Hey everyone, new here to the site. I've been rebuilding my 84 700R4 with my dad and we are just about done but ran into a problem. After putting in the pump I need to check the endplay, but I can no endplay at all. Could it not be down all the way or maybe an install problem? Any ideas would be helpful. To guide our rebuild we have been using a Haynes book for the 700r4 which has be very helpful. It states that it could be a wrong sized washer that is underneath the pump but I only have the factory one(I believe marked "6").

Once it's torn down and rebuilt the selective washer that was in there isn't necessarily the correct one anymore.

Take out the selective washer and then measure the end play. There should be a LOT now. Don't forget to measure with the pump gasket in place.

Do some math and then select the correct thickness washer that will give you the correct end play.

There's a table in the ATSG manual (there's one in the factory service manual as well) that equates the number stamped on the washer to what its thickness is. I've attach a scan of the table out of the 1987 FSM. Head over to the dealer, local transmission rebuilder or ebay (that's where I found the correct washer for my rebuild).

Re: 84 700R4

Thanks for the info, I'll check without the washer and let you know. Real excited to get this put back together, so far so good. Only my second trans rebuild I've tried(first 700r4). Now if only I could figure out my engine scenario. Car came with a factory roller cam 305 setup for carb but I have a 327 lo output from my grandfather sitting around. 327 spins free but hasn't been used in over 15 years and I don't know why it was pulled in the first place. Who knows what I'll do. Lol

Re: 84 700R4

When I first got the car it only would shift into first and reverse. Took it apart to find the 3-4 clutches were destroyed and the valve body had problems. 😡 But I won't give up on my dream of having a running Third Gen!😆
