Shifter hits console?

In my '89 firebird which the previous owner out a thirdgen Camaro center console on I've got a t5 with pro 5.0 shifter- the shifter hits the forward part of the console. I've tried flipping the shifter and with the letters backwards to the driver is the only way it goes in all the gears. I know the t5s lean towards the driver. Is this an issue with the Camaro console or? Tranny and engine are bolted down so I don't see what else could be the issue.

Re: Shifter hits console?

Given all the other details in your post, wouldn't be surprised if it's not a thirdgen shifter.

It has "Camaro/firebird 83-92" scribed into the metal.

Re: Shifter hits console?

I put the stock shifter in place and it's also hitting the console in 1st gear. Could not have the tq arm top bolt and driveshaft connected be the cause?

Stock shifter in neutral

Re: Shifter hits console?

Maybe a dumb question but is the console bolted down in the proper spot? Looks a tad to far back judging by what I'm seeing

Re: Shifter hits console?

I'm kinda not the smartest on this topic, but, I have a 4th gen motor and trans, and it doesn't hit anything.
just looking at your top pic (which is kinda dark) it almost looks like the center console isn't mounted all the way forward.
Also, you said it was a Camaro console with a Firebird dash?
That might be where the issue lies. I haven't been inside a 3rd gen firebird in many years, but I imagine it isn't a total fit.
You could just do what I did for a while and Mad Max it, no console, no carpet, no worries.

Re: Shifter hits console?

Yes previous owner swapped a thirdgen Camaro console in which is cracked in a few places. I honestly didn't think of that as it wasn't bolted down in the pics so I'll have to mess with it tomorrow.

Re: Shifter hits console?

Oh... it's a stock shifter... about like the one I threw in the trash in the early 80s when I busted my knuckle on the radio shifting into 3rd... no wonder everything hits everything.

Throw that in the trash and get an aftermarket shifter.

Re: Shifter hits console?

Man, too bad you aren't around here. Myself, I've had the console apart at least 4 times, now I am good at it. Plus, there are 2 u pull junkyards that have had a few firebirds. Looking around on google, it's hard to tell, but the Camaro and Firebird do look the same. If I remember right, there are two big screws on the console in the compartment, and two under that in the actual "frame" of the console. If those bottom two that mount the "frame" part aren't in, or skipped, the whole thing will sit wherever it feels like it.
I would get some pics of mine, but I am REALLY tired of taking that thing apart over and over. maybe someone can describe/clarify better?
Good luck!

I have a pro 5.0. I just put the stock shifter on to see if the shifter itself was the issue.
