SM465 into my 86, really

There's one other thread about this, but it seems perfect for my "Baja" build, especially since I already have one, it's essentially unbreakable, ( especially if the 1.5" input shaft is swapped in ) and I can't find a V8-spec T5 I can afford.
I have a V8 / T5 bellhousing, ( which would need bored out at a minimum ) and I have the SM465 aluminum bellhousing. I'm gonna hafta cut the trans tunnel, and making a shift linkage is going to take work, especially doing it cleanly for cheap.
This will also be my commuter, and my wife is expecting, so I'm going to end up enclosing as much of the linkage as possible.
This is likely to take all summer, I have a 2.29:1 gearset for the stock axle for now, I'll probably end up with a 2.47:1 9-inch Ford under there.
The trans is already cleaned up and half painted, pics soon.

Re: SM465 into my 86, really

This is still the cheapest way to hold a turbo V8, and I just scored an 11.875" clutch, with the 10-spline 1.5" input. This may not end up in my '86, but it will probably get test-fitted.
The next step is ordering the 1.5" input shaft, which is even stronger than the Ram / Cummins / NV4500 1.375" input. And that beefy 1.5" input is under $100, so I should have it in hand by February 2017.

Re: SM465 into my 86, really

Thought I'd do a spreadsheet. Decided to do the first one with Toyo Proxes TQ 345/40R17 drag radials, and a 2.28:1 8.75" 12-bolt '77 GM axle. Yes, they made them, 30-spline, 10-bolt inspection cover. Probably in a Caprice wagon with a 400. With no clutch dumps, and because an SM465 can't be powershifted, it should survive 1000 HP. Beyond that, a Ford 2.47:1 offers more strength at the cost of more revs. I'll scan it in tomorrow for all to see.
I'm planning the '88-'91 aluminum top cover, as much for the revised shifter location and precision as the weight reduction.
These things use a 35-spline output shaft with a 1350 yoke. I've found a1410 yoke that is out of stock, and I've found CTM solid forged 300M 1350 joints. Seems wisest to just run the 1350 yoke with a common Spicer 5-1350X until it fails. Then if the joint fails, try the CTM. If the yoke fails, hunt down a 1410 yoke.
