Press on Governer Cap Issues
86 Custom Convertible Trans Am 305
Ok I just changed out the weights to some lighter ones and shifting right where I want them. Used weights 2 and 3 and stock springs and shifts about 5300 RPM. Up from 3400.
The question: The kit came with an o ring to put on the governer cap. When i took the old one off there was no o ring.
1. Does the 700r4 press on cap require an o ring?
2. Cant get the top of the cover to press on. Not enough room to work with. Any suggestions? Will removing the tranny cross member and taking the dizzy cap off allow me to lower the tranny a few inches so i have room to work. Don't really want to do that but I'm open to anything at this point.

How did you replace the weights on the governor, road test it and then have the need to ask question No. 2?
Use the o-ring.

If there wasn't an o-ring originally, then don't use it. Some came with them while others didn't. I used a thin layer of non-hardening Permatex on the sealing lip.
Getting the cap back on is difficult with the trans in the car. Whatever you do, do not hammer on the center of the cap Only apply pressure to the lip around the edge.
IIRC, it has been a while, I used a long metal rod or such to get to the upper area of the cap. Removing the crossmember and lowering the trans will provide additional room.
RBob.

Re: Press on Governer Cap Issues
Thanks,
I RTV'd the cap with O ring last night. It seems to not have leaked during the test drive. Couldn't get the cap on all the way but hopefully it sealed. I will know more when i get a chance to really put it through its paces. Wasn't quite sure if i should use RTV silicone or a permatex aircraft sealer. Prob. should have gone with the Permatex sealer. If doesn't work I'll try dropping the tranny. Thanks guys, J
