HELP! 700R4 mechanical speedo to T5 electric speedo conversion

Need some help. I'm restoring an 87 IROC and made the decision while she is bare bones to convert the 700R4 over to a 5 speed. I bought a donor car (1991 Firebird) complete to do the swap. Just got the car on the lift to find the T5 is an electronic speedometer and my car is a cable driven car.
I look through the forum and can't seem to find a clear answer on how to make this electronic T5 work in my 87. These card aren't that technical, I didn't think, but is it as simple as taking a mechanical piece from a later T5 and swapping? Or can I take the mechanical part from the 700R to put into the T5??
Little help please.

The 700R4 VSS parts won't work, different mounting and form factor.

The stock cable driven stuff from an earlier T5 should bolt right in. Keep a hold of the electric VSS, they are no longer available new.

You need one of these
https://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-34521.../dp/B0013FSI6Y

And the correct gears for your rear end. Then a piece of metal to hold it in the transmission.

Speedo Gears Part NO. Driven Gears Part NO.

Does this piece need to be for a 5 speed transmission or is a 700R the same? If not does anyone have this piece used? How do I know what gear to buy? My rear is a 3.23 9 bolt set up?

Re: HELP! 700R4 mechanical speedo to T5 electric speedo conversion

go to this website...http://www.jagsthatrun.com/Pages/Spe...eedometer.html. pick the correct one. ( actually I have one I bought for my car and didn't use... will sell it for 90.00 shipped.) That part will convert your signal to electric pulse for your speedo. Now, forget about finding the correct drive and driven gears. Just get one of these and follow the directions and your trouble will be over. http://www.abbott-tach.com/era.htm

How well does this work? I heard this conversion will make the speedometer lag and bounce around? I was hoping to keep it simple as possible and thinking that would be to convert the trans to a cable. But that might night be as "simplistic" as I imagined.

Re: HELP! 700R4 mechanical speedo to T5 electric speedo conversion

I might need that VSS... I have a 86 TA t5 I'm putting in a 92 bird and I think they changed the pulse rate from 86 to 92. (Even '86 were electronic in the Firebirds).

The magnetic VSS is the same 4K PPM for all of those years.

I have the correct pulse rate converter for you. It works with a transmission where the speedo was cable driven. Is that what you have?
