Need transmission advise

Hello all I am new to the forum and just purchased a 84 z28. Its an automatic with a 305. I am pulling the 305 and installing a 5.3 with cam and ported heads. I would like a manual trans. T56 is not in budget(1500-2500). I can get a world class t5 for a good price. I wont be drag racing, just a few burnouts and fun driving on the freeway and open country roads. Justba powerful cruiser for family fun. Will the WC t5 work. I was told it wont hold up, but im wondering if thats just for drag racing.

Posting it 6 times makes it look like you already got 3-4 good responses.
Doing the T5 won't be cheap, you'll have to spend at least $300 on a bellhousing, because the T5 one won't clear the LSx 14" flywheel.
Other than that, third gear is the weakest link, but avoid all powershifts and all clutch dumps if you want to ensure never hurting it.

Re: Need transmission advise

I would consider it.
Add up what you will have to change for each installation.
If you're considering. 2.66 First gear T56, make sure the rear gear is appropriate. I am hoping you have 3.73 rear gears.

Re: Need transmission advise

If it hooks up, the trans is toast. Pure and simple.

You can tear up a T-5 with a 305, I know FOR SURE. (tore up about 5 or 6 myself that way) You can turn one into shrapnel in a matter of a few seconds with a 400. (guess how I know that too...) People say you can do it with a 6-cyl, but I've never even seen one of those myself, let alone drove one or tore up a T-5 with one, so I can't claim first-hand knowledge.

Drive it like there's an EGG connecting the engine and the drive shaft (because there WILL BE) and it can last a pretty good while though.

Waste of money in a car that's supposed to make power and get used, if you ask me. Go pretend you're going to "beef up" a couple, THEN after you get tired of working on em all the time go buy a T-56, and come back and tell us how much money you "saved".

And I've personally witnessed a 3300# Mustang break into the high 9s on a 4-cylinder T5, it's all in how you drive it.

Re: Need transmission advise

I've personally known a guy that was sky-diving one day, and his parachute failed to open; yet he survived. Should I get on all the sky-diving message boards on the Internet and post all about "I've personally witnessed a guy survive blah blah blah... it's all in how you fall"?

Somehow it rarely works out well when a n00b deliberately plans to be in the long tail of a probability distribution. Go with the odds to avoid disaster, not assume you're going to be the rare outlier.

Re: Need transmission advise

Somewhere here on TGO, if you go way back several years, there was a thread on using the T5 with serious power, and they made it live.
Yes, Sofa destroyed several, because he's evidently not a good driver, he's abusive. I guess being able to afford all the T5s he broke gave him the right to break them, but some of us could have gotten a lot more enjoyment out of them. These days they're worth $600 each, so of course I'm resentful. Rich people suck. They cheat themselves and us.
If you want to drive like Sofa, you can break any trans. Probably even the maximum-effort SM465 I'm putting together for my turbocharged 454. But if you just want to enjoy a manual with a 350-horse 5.3, the T5 can suffice.
Those burnouts you plan, if the 5.3 has enough Wheaties to break them loose in first without a clutch drop, fine. Otherwise, forget it.

Re: Need transmission advise

Hello, I have been having trouble with my 1991 rs automatic. If I put it in drive it will stall out, also when I put it in reverse. If it's in 3rd gear it's fine up until 30 then it starts to shake when this happens I put it back on D then it stops up until 45 I put it back on 3 and at 50 it shakes so back to D it is and it stops. The car won't stall out if I stop while it is in 3rd gear. I have replaced the map sensor, throttle position sensor, idle control valve, both injectors, all sparkplugs and wires, all the vacuum lines even the one to the tranny, evaps system is good and vacuum lines are replaced as well, fuel pump is good checked the psi, fuel filter is replaced, checked the timing and that was good. The only thing I have left that I'm going to do is transmission control solenoid/module. But after that I'm out of ideas. I need some help please. Msg me if you have any idea what to do next or what the heck is wrong with this thing.

Re: Need transmission advise

I've been running t-5 on my 315 hp 350. I run the strip about for or five times a year. I have had no issue. I did just change out the engine, trans and now I'm running a t-56 on a 400 hp 350. No issues with it so far. I believe if you are spending the money on a t-5 you would be better to save up for a t-56. I paid a 1000 for mine used on Craig's list. That way if you decide to increase your hp and torque you can without any worries.
