Open to slip differential

Open to slip differential
I have a 1987 sport coupe with an open differential. I want to put a slip in. I purchased a used slip carrier from an 88/89 camaro and new ring and pinion install kit. My axles are 26 spline, carrier is 28 spline. I need to get new spider gears for axles to fit. My question is can I swap it all out and where can I get a set of spider gears? Or should I buy new axles? Thx alot

Re: Open to slip differential
You mean a limited slip differential (aka Posi).
You will have to get 28 spline axles. It doesn't work the other way.
What gear ratio do you have and what series of differential did you get? If they are not the same series then it won't work.

Re: Open to slip differential
Not sure but I think a 3.27. I am new to this so i dont know much yet. I purchased a 3.73 ring and pinion install kit from National drivetrain off ebay. I'll have to ck what series.
PLATINUM TORQUE - 3.73 RATIO RING AND PINION & MASTER BEARING INSTALLATION KIT
3.73 RATIO RING AND PINION & MASTER BEARING INSTALLATION KIT - Includes everything required to replace your ring and pinion properly - Kit includes: matched ring and pinion gear set, complete pinion & side bearings and races, pinion seal, pinion nut, ring gear bolts, pattern checking compound & brush, thread locking compound, cover gasket and shims (most)
For 3.23+ cases OR when replacing a 3.23 or numerically higher gearset - GM CORP 7.5 & 7.625 inch - 1982-1998

Re: Open to slip differential
Do you have a 9 bolt Borg Warner rear end or a GM 7.5 10 bolt rear end? It seems like you may have mixed things up. The 3.27 is a Borg Warner ratio and the kit that you bought is for the GM 10 bolt.

Re: Open to slip differential
10 bolt gear ratios are 2.73, 3.08, 3.23, 3,42 and 3,73. You need to know which series differential you have to now if it will work with the gears that you have.
Yes, get 28 spline axles. I don't know what differential you bought, but most of the time you can't swap the 26 and 28 spline axles gears.

Re: Open to slip differential
Same rear housing, yes.
Same carrier, no.
Your 87 almost certainly (99.99999% likely at least) has, or rather came with, a 10-bolt with 26-spline axles. 3.27 does not exist in that rear. 3.23, maybe.
Best path given what you say you think you believe you might maybe have if you know what you're looking at is, buy a new pr of 28-spline axles. Cheeeeep... less than $250. They'll come with new bearings and seals: DEFINITELY put those in too.
Same carrier, no.

Re: Open to slip differential
I got these from summit, came with Koyo bearings I think they are made by ten. Only issue I had was they would not fit under the stock 82-89 rotors I had to have them turned down.

Re: Open to slip differential
A lot of great info/advice here but why not talk to the shop that is going to do the installation. At least get on the same page as them.
And I hope your not going to say your doing the installation.
I also suggest Tom Differentials if your going to buy on line.
He has helped many of us and will sell you the correct parts the first time.
Give him a call.

Here's a link to my 10 Bolt Upgrade = https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...de-photos.html
Its basically a list of parts you will need.
