3.6L Swap Kit

3.6L Swap Kit
I am looking for FEEDBACK ONLY!!!!!!!!
If a full swap kit could be offered for putting the GM 3.6L Quad Cam engine into a third gen F-body would anyone want one?
The engine and the Aisin 6 speed transmission would be be transplanted, yes it has been done once already and works 100%.
The kit would have new engine mount plates that would allow it to bolt up to the third gen 2.8L mounts and a trans mount plate to allow the Aisin transmission to use the factory cross member. A carburetter manifold could be ordered if desired with the kit for an extra fee. Also a Megasquirt ECM and plug and play harness could included if you wish to use the EFI system.
You would need to provide the engine, transmission, drive shaft, radiator hoses, a carb if you go that route, and a few other minor things.
Yes I do have a drive shaft that will work but I sent it out to be made and I can include the specs for the shaft with the kit.
For those who would want to use the stock T5 or the 700R4 you would have to get an adapter from someone else but shouldn't be hard to find someone to make one.
For those who hate belt drives as I do, no fear this is a chain drive DOHC engine.
Let me know what you all think and if there is enough interest I will post an order form on the Classifieds section. If you have any questions feel free to ask here and more personal questions feel free to PM me.
For the moment there are no pictures available!!!

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
Nothing of it installed but it is in the light blue car in my sig. My camera was damaged and with the area I live in haven't had the time or money to get a new one yet.
----------
Currently I do not have the means to make the adapter for the trans but if there is enough interest I will see what I can do.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
isn't that the LY7? from what I read from a brief research its a 54* engine? Wouldn't be easyer to do a 3.4L DOHC like the LQ1? You would probably break a T-5 from a V6 thirdgen with that LY7 if it was able to fit.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
Not be harsh I wouldn't get your hopes up on interest. The only swap the v6 guys would do is a 3.4L or maybe 4.3L. Other than that its SBC, LTx, or LSx. How much for the engine and tranny combo? How hard are they come by? LY7 vs LS2/T-56 swap? If I had the option of both I always pick LS2 hands down, LSx swaps are getting cheaper and from the LSx guys are saying, the gas mileage revils my own V6 with a 5spd. 400hp vs 300hp? Biggest market for bolt ons vs a small market? Sorry not trying to flame you.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
Nope its all good, That was really the kind of things I was looking for. The engines can be had for under 2k used and the tranny is about 1k. However if you would rather have a t56 or t5 or even the 700r4 I am sure the adapter wouldn't be as much as the Aisin tranny. Those who want big power at no matter what will go for a V8 every time but there are those who wonder how far the V6 will go. Thats who I am here to find out how far I can push the GM V6 engines. i like to be different.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
I also like to be different, but am using all stock GM parts (with exception of cam and headers) to make thing easier. A 3500 can reach well over 300bhp (Dave's has about 315), and can pe put in a thirdgen in it's entirety with a tubular k member.
What kind of cost are you talking?
I have a CNC shop, if you get me some drawings/measurements, I can give you an estimate on the adapter plate. They aren't that difficult to make, my frind in the shop next door has a 327 in Fiero using one.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
I'm interested in more information. I dont know much about that engine, could you give more details? I'm guessing its the 3.6 from the newer malabus? I think if you market it properly, and show what one of those engines can do in a test car, there will be a group interested.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
I'll pull the measurements as soon as my block gets back from the shop for the adapter.
As the the engine info there is a lot of great info on the web.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_High_Feature_engine#3.6
http://60degreev6.com/content/36L_VV...Specifications
They have factory forged crank and rods. the pistons are hypereutectic meaning a high silicon concentration adding strength to an otherwise cast piston. They are not as strong as forged but have been known to take 15psi boost.
Keep this stuff coming.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
I was told by multiple sources that anything over 5psi is a risk with hyper pistons. Just wanted to throw that out there so people dont think that hyper pistons are good boost pistons.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
Hyper pistons are actually not as strong as true castings in the case of detonation
I have seen 31psi on stock cast pistons - of course with a good tune, but the first detonation made the pistons look like crumpled tin foil.
In fact forged AL pistons are not forged at all, you can't forge aluminum. They are made from 7071. I have been considering doing some on our lathe, but I need to do some heat testing first. The 7071 expands different than castings, might have to heat them before machining even, to get them right.
They will actually be billet.

Let me know how those Billet pistons work out for you. For those concerned with the stock pistons they aren't bad to replace, thats part of why mine is at a machine shop right now tee hee.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
Hi,
I'm at the moment considering an engine swap but here in the UK it's not so easy to get the parts Speaking from a V6 point of view, if we go to the V8 we need to swap suspension, exhaust and the transmission etc. The easiest swap is the 3.4 as it's a bolt in replacement but you only get 20bhp more if you started with a 3.1. Therefore a 3.6 that could use the stock transmission and not require suspension changes sounds good to me Where would it stand regards the loom and ECM, stock guages etc?
Thanks,
Ian

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
Looks very interesting. Seems like this engine would be capable of a beating...perfect for a swap in a street car looking to upgrade. If I was looking at potential swaps for my firebird at the moment this would be one of my considerations. Presently, it seems like the only swap to get "modern" technology is an LSx engine, 3.4 or 3.8. So I think swapping an engine that is as efficient as the 3.6 will become more popular if there is an aftermarket for it. Now, I'm not saying I would by the first swap kit that is made but people will buy if they see it making good power. A standard 2.8 makes around 130 hp, so upgrading to something like the 3.6 would be night and day. I think we may need to see pictures and how easy it may be for the average after-work driveway mechanic

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
I can tell you right now it wont work with the stock computer, you will need an after market unit, however I have a harness that pull plug into the harness where the old ECU was and will allow the Megasquirt to plug into that. There will be 5 extra wires that will need to be run as the ignition system is slightly different, though so far it has only been tested on a my 89 that originally had a 2.8.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
Is the ECM that goes with the 3.6 not useable because I don't think everyone would want to be tuning themselves and would prefer a more plug and play solution?

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
Sure I wasn't expecting to be able to plug it into our harness but like some of the guys on here, we'd be looking for the easiest solution and the 3.6 harness might need changes to fit the f-body etc.
Sounds a good engine though, modern and more bhp but I doubt it would rival a V8... I guess for us V6 guys it's what's easiest to swap for the maximum gains and if cost is an issue etc.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
I would like too, but I would want the asin 6 speed, and at 3K bones, it just aint in the cards at all.
The 3.6 is an awesome engine though, holden (GM's Australian unit, that made the GTO and G8, and basicly the new Camaro) had a concept called the Torona with a turbo 3.6 making up wards of 350HP IIRC. the newest 3.6 in the CTS is 304HP N/A ... all they did was basicly add direct injection, and got somthing like a 30-40HP boost.
I'd like to see a 3.8 Swap kit though, I love 90* engines.. but I dont want a V8 right now. lol

All this thread is about is the possibility af someone making a swap kit...that never happened. There is no need to put up every "idea" people have...thats why there is the search button.

Re: 3.6L Swap Kit
A 300-horse 3.6 impresses me, and I think I could live with one, but the prices are still over $3K for just the engine. I can do a 300-horse 350 for half that.
Money aside, the aftermarket support for the 3.6 seems to be all CAI's and cat-backs, for keeping it in the 2010+ Camaros. You'd need a rear-ended donor to get everything you need, so budget no less than $5K, and even then, what advantages, if any, does that give over an LS1/T56 swap? I couldn't find a single one besides novelty or bragging rights. And who would that brag really impress? Aren't you building your car to suit you? You chose to live with it, it should be fun to drive every day. This V6 might be fun enough, IDK, but to me, time in the garage, or overtime at work, or a second job, is less fun than driving.
