The best mufflers for V6 !!!!!

Update 9-6-09 : Its fixed and running heres the clip of my exhaust...

Magnflow exhaust
Alison

Hello people,

I have a 3.1 RS. I just pulled out the exhaust/muffler. Now before I go upgrading the exhaust I would like to get your guy's opinon and sound clips if any. And please dont reply back with "Go to Search forums". Yeah there is sound clips of different mufflers and a bunch of V8's, I also didn't find much on sound clips or opinons on the V6 board, someone did do sound clips but only for V8's, not much help for us V6ers. Again I HAVE A V6.....V6 3.1. So I've been told Magnaflow is the best if your looking into upgrading from stock....

So Any sound clips of any third gens with a V6.

Update *Hello people. I just finished getting my exhaust (went with Magnaflow) and should have a clip up soon. I know 5+ pages on this thread is a lot of info but you will like. Sound clips, stats, and advice...Hope you all enjoy and thanks for everyones comment, question and help, Bird your the man, thanks for being a great help!!!*

go to #260 people and thats the best V6 sound I've ever heard Wow.

Re: The best mufflers for V6 !!!!!

As you can imagine, Magnaflow and flowmaster are the best. Some other cheepies sound Ok and cost less buy the catback magnaflow system is by far the most popular.

People over here seem to like it. Everyone has a little different opinion of what sounds "good".

I had a Blowmaster 80 series 2.5" in and dual 2.5" out... Sounded better when my fuel injectors were screwed up than it did when the engine was running right due to burning gas in my catalytic converter. I couldn't wait to get rid of that thing and get my Thrush turbo glasspack... Between both of the Thrush mufflers (original set rusted out), and the tailpipes and hangers I still spent less than the PO of my car did on that crummy-sounding muffler.

:edit: No, I don't have a sound clip... It would sound terrible because my new pipes are screwy and hit the heat shields going over the rear axle and there are still a couple of leaks I can't get rid of if my life depends on it.

Re: The best mufflers for V6 !!!!!

Wow thanks for your guys input. I guess magnaflow is something to look into. Anyone with a sound clip of magnaflow with a 3.1 or 2.7 V6? I think we the V6ers would like to hear something to that effect.

As for flowmaster.....I would have to agree in calling it a blowmaster. I had that on the camaro when I had purchased the camaro. I pulled it due to it sounding like a honda Yuck yuck....but not sure if it was an 80 series.

So again any sound clips or more opions?

Magnaflow so far take the lead....

Re: The best mufflers for V6 !!!!!

If your Flowmaster was a dual outlet, it was an 80 series, as the 40 series were single outlet, and I don't think anyone would be so mean as to put one of the other Flowmaster mufflers on a V6. I'll get under there and see if I can't get those heat shields squared away and maybe get a clip for you. Between that rattling and whatever is wrong with my new belt making it squeal, my car is making me bananas...

Maverick that would be great if you can do that. Ok so from what I was reading on the flowmaster I had a 40 series and it sounded very bad, I swear it sounded like a honda going ape s*&%!!!

Thanks again...

Re: The best mufflers for V6 !!!!!

Personally I would not go with Magnaflow and flowmaster cause are v6 sound so high pitch with those mufflers. Dynomax is what I recommenced.
I know There is a sound clip on here somewhere, if I find it I'll edit/post it
----edit---
Found it check it out
Dynomax
also if you want a full exhaust system there is a Dynomax Super Turbo Exhaust Systems from summit and it is a cat-back

Alright reaper that sounds good. the wifie approves. She liked the way it sounded. So far our interest is heading towards the Dynomax.

Anyone have a clip of a Magnaflow connected to a V6.

Finally someone is smart....flowmasters have one of the worst flow rates of any muffler...plus if your using a cross-flow (single in dual outlet) it's even worse....only thing that flowed worse was believe it or not....glass packs. Hooker aero chamber flowed great but best was hooker max flow...flowed the same as a straight pipe.(test using 2 1/2inch pipe)..believe that or not too....I'll try to find the printout of the flow numbers for mufflers i have and post them for you. I use a aerochamber and love it...

Re: The best mufflers for V6 !!!!!

I dont know why everybody slams flowmaster. I have the Delte Force race muffler on my 3.1 and I love it! it sounds great and makes more torque than open pipes. it is a little on the loud side, but its a good kind of loud. try one and i think you'll change your mind.

IMO backpressure is a misconception...I've tried many different mufflers, it's not backpressure that produces power....it the...to put it in simple terms....it's the pressure waves that reverberate back to the motor....flowmaster have never been good at that....they create to much blockage....plus have horrible pressure waves....Put the car on a dyno and try different things (been there done that) and you'll see first hand....also factory piping for f-bodies are horrible....worse than horrible....putting on a whole new exhaust with mandrel bent pipes will help drastically.....I got my car from 13's into the 12's..with just putting on a complete exhaust...but that's just my opinion....it's not that delta force mufflers or flowmasters are bad...they are better than stock...but not near the best.....nothing is better when doing research than actual flow numbers...not just mufflers, but intakes, heads, headers, injectors, cams, anything you put on a motor....the more air and fuel you get in and out the more power...simple...the best flowing stuff usually produces the most power...but again this is just my opinion......

Hey, entrig00
Little update turns out that clip I posted was of a Dynomax ultra-flo cat-back system, I'm told the turbo is just a little quieter but not much.

Also I dug up a flowmaster muffler clip
Flowmaster

No sound clip but with no cat and a straight shot Cherry Bomb no one can tell I have a V6 by sound at any rpm.

Re: The best mufflers for V6 !!!!!

Cherry Bombs are a great thing to replace the cat with, as long as your state doesn't have emmisions. The first Flowmaster Reaper put up sounds pretty good, the 2nd one you can only hear at idle and what sounds to be 2K rpm.

And I gotta say something everyone should already know... You can expect MAYBE 2 horsepower MAX out of a new muffler. All you guys debating on which will make you more power are full of it. It's the manifolds, Y pipes, and cats that are generally restrictive, not the piping or muffler. When you add exhaust you should expect an improvement in sound and not much else.

Oh, and putting a catback on a 3.1/2.8 will NOT knock a second off your quarter mile time...

Re: The best mufflers for V6 !!!!!

A cherrybomb may not be the best sounding but it doesn't scream V6 like the rest even up in the high rpm band, so I love it.

You can gain power but you have to open up both ends.
An enigne is just an air pump.

Reaper - Bro you killing me with these clips, good ones now I'm very confussed. Thanks again for the clps very good stuff.

Gumby - So your saying the cherrybomb with no cat sounds like a V8, interesting...but doesnt that mess with the back pressure? I'm sure all of us would love to hear how that sounds...If you can get a sound clip or anyone here can post it that would be great...

Please man!!!!

K-slice - Good point made on the info you provided...I just dont want to get something thats going to make my car sounding like a honda is hidden in there after 3000rpms..but again thanks for your info....

KBcorbra - Great clips thanks...btw, is that a 40series or 80series?

91interceptorZ - WOW great opinion. now what would you recommend for a muffler? lol

8urv8 - I have the Delte Force race muffler on my 3.1 and I love it! it sounds great and makes more torque than open pipes. Bro I gotta hear that...come on man I know you can get a sound clip...thanks.

Maverick H1L - hows that sound clip coming alone?

ALRIGHT PEOPLE I JUST EXTENDED MY TIME FRAME IN GETTING AN EXHAUST SYSTEM DO THE INFO YOU ALL PROVIDED....

I would have to recommend.....for max performance reasons.....a hooker max flow or aero chamber.......I don't know what they sound like on a v6...but on my v8 the aero chamber is rear deep and throaty.....that's my two cents......good shopping!!

It's been snowing here for 3 days now, and between that, work, and working on the garden equipment, I haven't had a chance to get under there and put those heat shields up where they belong. I hope to have time on Friday.

Back pressure is bad(for performance). It's merely to change sound.

To a point, yes, but every engine needs to have SOME backpressure to work properly, as was indicated by some magazine a while back. I forgot what mag, but they say 2 PSI or less is acceptable from a performance standpoint.
Anyways, some EGR valves REQUIRE backpressure to work properly (if not all of them), and some other things might as well.

Other than reusing some unburned fuel, I don't see how it's needed to work properly. Exhaust ports are there to spit out as much of the exhaust created by the engine as possible. Anything that blocks it is just creating more work for the engine to push out. I'm not doubting you, just seems logical that way. I'll try to find that mag and read up on it.

Also another thing that will help your engine breathe a little bit easier is to remove the cat and/or gut it and put it back on, if you have to. in my county, we dont have emissions inspections here, so I don't have to worry about it. I took mine off of my 3.1L and the and it made a HUGE difference with my throttle response. I think it may have been the orignal cat. I also later replaced all of my exhaust pipe with mandrel bent T-304 Stainless Steel and that helped too.

Alright people I should have a clip in here for you guys on how the car sounds without mufflers. Now to those of you guys that just dropped in hello...and to make a long story short...

I cut out my muffler...it was a flowmaster 40 series and I was not impressed on how it sounded very much like a import...not my thing !

So Saturday this coming Saturday I'll have a sound clip of how our 3.1 sound with stock everything but no mufflers.

Anyone with sound clips feel free in posting and thanks!!!

Re: The best mufflers for V6 !!!!!

There's a black 92 that's out by my girlfriends house. No muffler on it and I think it sounds pretty good. Granted when I hear it it's at low rpm's but the first time i heard it I mistaked it to be a v8.

Re: The best mufflers for V6 !!!!!

I thought the dynomax sounded really good. I'm looking at a new muffler, my stock one has a 2" inlet and outlet and doesn't fit my new I-pipe. so I'm putting it on with clamps and a coupler for now, but dynomax is sounding really smooth. I like the smooth sound, not so much scratchy and raspy. sorta reminds me of my cousin's 99 Trans Am w/ SLP Loudmouth. just sort of though. thats a real exhaust.

are you refering to this one? http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku
that might be the one I get. I prefer the dual outlet but this is much cheaper.

Great clip...

I'm working on trying to put a sound clip on here but its being a freaking pain...

Eitherway sometime today I'll have a sound clip and video of the 3.1 without the muffler...Again I'm doing this that way you guys can hear how it sounds. I dont like and thats why with any clips you guys add on here it would help much better for myself and people trying to make a choice.

Thanks again...

Re: The best mufflers for V6 !!!!!

What's all this talk of the fabled backpressure? Backpressure is just an indication of flow restirction. Flow velocity is what's important, that's why it's important to have the proper diameter exhaust and header pimary size. There's no magic 'waves' that come from backpressure, 'tuned pressure waves' result from a properly designed exhaust system. Legit tuned headers have primary lengths/diameter 'tuned' to merge exhaust pulses in series at a particular rpm range. And the egr doesn't need backpressure to operate, it uses manifold vacuum.

I experimented with a few different exhaust systems a while ago. I tried a flowmaster made for the 4th gen v6's on the stock exhaust and it sounded like crap and lost power. I had a magnaflow inplace of the cat for a while with a straightpipe and it sounded alright, but I didn't like the resonation effect it had. The pitch changed too much at 1500 rpm, it was constantly changing from low to high like I was constantly giving the throttle a hearty stab just cruising around. Didin't really notice a difference in power. I even hacked off the exhaust in the wheelwell and ran around without a muffler just to see how it would sound. Actually sounded better than I thought it would below 2000rpm, above that it sounded like it was ripping itself apart. I have to agree with gumby on the single glasspack- it actually sounds pretty damn good below ~3000rpm. I ran one inplace of the cat with a straightpipe and felt a little improvement. I finally ended up with modified heddmann headers (for the S10) right into dual glasspacks. Sounds awesome throughout the whole powerband and gave the 'lil v6 a bit more scoot. Doesn't sound like a v8, but it's certainly not whiney or obnoxious like the fart cannons ri*ers run around with. I think it's got it's own distinct sound, kinda low & rumbly like a v8 without the 'rolling thunder' effect.

I can say with reasonable certanity you dont have dual exhaust. You may have a single in dual out muffler which is whay most cars on here have. True duals on a 3.1 or 2.8 would pretty much be exhaust overkill.
This is what true dual exhaust looks like:

Most likley what you and, all of us have:

OK then...I would have to agree with K-Slice on this.

But hey if you have pix of your set up being true dual then....ahh wow?

But the only thing we care about on this thread is a sound clip.....
