Alternator Wiring

Ok so my battery isnt getting charged after doing the engine swap. The battery is brand new and is holding a charge fine. The alternator was working previously before the swap aswell. Im thinking I screwed up the wiring somehow. Im not quite sure what Im missing though. The alternator has a brown wire on a connector going to it. On the same connector it has a red power wire that has an eyelet on it that goes to the terminal on the alternator. I feel as if Im missing a power wire or something. Can someone help me? A picture would be awesome also. Thanks in advance. Car is a 1985 firebird. Engine is a 3.4, but all the equipment is from a 2.8 and is an automatic trans.

Re: Alternator Wiring

There should be a large main charge wire from teh charge terminal at the back of the alternator to the battery.

Re: Alternator Wiring

Ok so I hooked up a 4gauge wire from the charge terminal to the junction behind the passenger headlight. (I think this is how it was wired from factory) Well now I have zero power for some reason. All the interior lights and stuff nolonger work. I tried jumping the car and even put it on a charger to check the battery. So now I need to figure out the other electrical gremlins and iron them out. If anyone might have a suggestion as to where to start that would be nice. I'll check the starter wiring tomorrow.

Re: Alternator Wiring

im not sure if it being a v6 car matters, but the wiring on my alternator has 4 wires, the thick wire coming from the pos side of the battery going to the connector on back of the alt, a tan striped wire, a brown wire, and the red wire, i attached a couple pics, i had to buy a new connector for my alt so your connector might look different, but you get the idea

the tan wire with the stripe goes to the middle black wire of the connector on the alt, brown wire goes to brown, and red to red

my problem was the PO rigged up my alt, so when it finally died, i bought a new one and tried to wire it up the same as the PO had it, long story short i blew 2 or 3 new alternators before i figured out that there were wires missing and everything was rigged, so i had to dig in the wiring harness a little to find the brown and tan wires, but theyre supposed to come out of the harness in the same place as the red wire going to the alt
