Oil Problem

Car: 1986 Pontiac Firebird
Engine: 2.8L V6 MFI
Transmission: 700R4
Oil Problem

So I've had a problem with my oil light coming on. Took it to the mechanic and they told me the oil pump wasn't pumping so they replaced the oil pump, oil pan gasket, fuel filter, and oil pressure switch. The mechanic stated that the pump and switch are working properly.

I took the my car back and the light is still coming on only when stopped and goes away when accelerating. The mechanic isn't sure why but stated to drive it long distances, especially on highways, and to bring it back in two weeks to see if the light goes away.

My question is is there possibly another problem or would the driving like recommended work?

don't trust any "light" get a real oil PSI gauge on it.

idiot lights are just that often.

but you want a oil psi gauge on the car, it tells so much.

Those 60° v6's are touchy when it comes to oil pressure when they get up there in miles.....being they have those horrible factory aluminum pumps that tend to ware out quick

Get a gauge....that engine may thank you one day

Well apparently the mechanic couldn't solve the problem and stated that a bearing is shot inside the engine and stated that I would need a engine rebuild.

Now there is 2 oil pressure switches one when it receives pressure it will send fire to the fuel pump, this one has 2 wires, the other one has one wire and it sends info to the oil pressure light. Mine does the same thing, 2.8 87 sc. Im thinking its a bad pigtail, or a bad pressure switch.. my engine is a rebuild probably only have 5-6 thousand miles on it. Mine will come on when warmed up and at a stop. sometimes stall.
