most turbo guys want an automatic, so they can load it.
reg T5 is all you need.
WC T5 if you plan to really beat on it, speed shifting 5000 RPM drops.
Truck boards they use reg T5s just fine on straight 6 swaps, it hadnle towing and such just fine, its the speed shifting and clutch drops that kill a T5 in a 3rd gen.

Re: manual transmission that will bolt to 2.8
u could use the speedway motors 90* v8 to 60*v6 trans adapter plate , normally this adapter is used to bolt v8 automatics to the v6 , but in therory if u planned it out u could put any manual trans u wanted behind the v6.the easiest way would be a hyd clutch setup , mechanical/cable clutch setups will be alot harder to adapt
the t5 will live if u dont abuse it daily , i had one behind a 383 and i beat the hell out of it and it lived the only reaosn it lived was the car had no traction m had i ever bolted slick on the car it have grenaded the poor thing

Look for a 88+ WC T5 out of a V6 car and do the whole swap, so much easier and cheaper that way.

Re: manual transmission that will bolt to 2.8
I got lucky and got a wct5 from a 94 v6 camaro at my local u pull.
130 bucks, no more 700.
The nice part about manuals, is that if you blow up the gearbox, keep your old bellhousing, and change the box. You might have to swap input shafts, depending on the source of the next one, but at least they're everywhere.
But, the Fbody bells have a slant to them, to lean the trans more to the driver, and the tailshaft is slanted too, so that it mounts flat on the xmember.
So again, what Ducky said, and if its a total paperweight, keep the fbody bell and tailshaft, and play Dr. Frankenstein.

Thought the 4th gen tranny didn't work for some reason?
I know the Mustang one doesn't as the Camaro/Firebird T5's sit at an angle.

the 4th gen v6 transmissions are t5's, which fit fine.
the 4th gen v8 had t56's, which apparently are more work, I don't know the specifics on it.

But the 4th gen T5 uses a different spline count, you need either an Astro 4.3 clutch disk or to swap the input shafts.

Or, just swap the flywheel from a 4th-gen, too, and a 4th-gen clutch kit.

Re: manual transmission that will bolt to 2.8
My engine is a 4th gen 3.4, and I have a 4th gen t5.
When I ordered parts, I got the 3.4 flywheel, clutch and plate. No problems.
I thought the splines for 2.8's and 3.4's were the same...
