'96 L36 help?

I have one, pure stock, no mods, drives fine, but really low vacuum. Seems the pre-'99 heads are known for cracking? I know this one has been overheated, but still runs well. Anyone know if a head swap will fix the vacuum?
I've tried everything else, including spraying WD40 around the intake gaskets. Even tried a tiny shot through the PCV in case the leak was in the lifter valley.
This is the aluminum-intake version from a Camaro, not the plastic-intake version from a FWD car.
I've been Googling, looking on other forums, no solid answers.

Also, anyone remember an old magazine article where they tried a shelf cam from Comp in one of these, had to send it back for a custom one with lazier lobes because of the knock sensor? I already contacted Comp about it, they need more info.
