GTA Rims Largest possible tire
Well i just got a set of Cross lace rims and i am in need of new tires all around. I am wondering what is the largest size tire i can fit on the rim without any modification at all. I tried to search and i couldn't find anything, that says the largest tire on the front is blah blah blah or the largest you can fit on the rear is blah... I want the largest possible on the rear and the largest possible on the front that wont rub, they dont have to be the same size. I plan to lower the car with eibach pro kit, if that is a factor.
Thanks
Thanks

Re: GTA Rims Largest possible tire
Keep in mind, that the crosslaces are 16x8, just the the Camaro wheels are 16x8. I'm gonna say this for the billionth time on TGO.....
295/50R16 rear...255/45(or 50 your choice)R16 front
295/50R16 rear...255/45(or 50 your choice)R16 front

Re: GTA Rims Largest possible tire
Isn't 245/50 16 Stock for 16x8 wheels? Why would they rub? I have new Falken 912's upfront now and that are 245/50 16 and they don't rub at all.

Re: GTA Rims Largest possible tire
245s are the stock size & should not, unless something on your car is different.
So yes...255s will rub if your 255s do already.

Re: GTA Rims Largest possible tire
BFG radial T/A is the 295/50, and they used to make a matching 245/50R16, but it didn't sell because it was overpriced.
If your 245s are rubbing, then you must have a steering box and / or control arms from a car originally built with 15" wheels. If that's the case, then just stop turning the wheel so far.

Put the 16" 245 on a 15" steering stop car & there is your issue.

Re: GTA Rims Largest possible tire
I'm thinking of moving to the 16" IROC wheel for my (upgrading from 15"
this is the first I heard about anything the steering box being different for the cars with the 15" wheels
am I safe with the 245s? Id like to put 245s on the front and 255 on the rear

Did the 15" -> 16" swap on my wife 90 RS & went & ran autocross a lot.
Or you could do 255s front/295s rear.

Re: GTA Rims Largest possible tire
interesting., and thanks...
one thing I noticed is the diameter of the 255s is alot closer to the diameter of the tires I'm' running now than the 245s.. is it the width of the tires that make them rub?
if the fronts are 245 (25.7 diameter) and and the backs are 255 (26 diameter) will that effect my speedometer in any noticable way?

I've run 255s, but never really noticed (or don't remember it...i do turn 40 next month, after all! ). My 315s spec at 25.7 & don't notice any difference & never get pulled over for speeding, when I thought I wasn't.

Re: GTA Rims Largest possible tire
i just looked it up... running 245's the speedometer would read 59.2 instead of 60... I can live with that...

FYI - You're not going to get a reply, Stephen was banned from this site.
The whole premise of this thread is silly. I wouldn't want the biggest tire I can fit on the rim without popping off. I would want the size that performs best for desired purpose.

Re: GTA Rims Largest possible tire
Every tire has an optimal wheel width and every wheel has several optimal tire choices.
That said, I would stick with the 245-50-16 on a 8" wide OEM 16" wheel.

Re: GTA Rims Largest possible tire
I've seen 295/50R16 drag tires on 16x8s, it can be done, but I wouldn't want it for autocross. Google shows there used to be 295/50R16 non-drag tires, but none of my favorite online tire stores has any, some say they're discontinued. I found a pair in the UK, and another in India, but I wouldn't want to see the shipping costs.
Years ago, BFG made the Comp T/A VR4 in a 275/50R16 or similar. Toyo makes a 275/45R16 drag radial, Kumho just barely discontinued a 265/45R16 autocross tire, BFG still offers a 255/50R16 for '84-'88 Corvettes and street GNXs, there are a few 255/50R16 drag offerings, but everything else is 245s and under.
