Wheel to axle flange...?

Wheel to axle flange...?
Hi guys
In my GM manual it always says to "mark relationship of wheel to axle flange" at the rear wheels before removing them. I've never done this and never seen a mechanic do that before removing the wheels. Does anybody know why it says to do so in the manual? What's the purpose?
Thanks,
Thomas

Re: Wheel to axle flange...?
The purpose would be to maintain the factory "balance" to prevent vibration. But the wheel is not dynamically balanced on the axle and there are so many variables that it would be pointless to try keep the wheel in same place.

Which is why I had no clue. I'm sure they were aware of that as well. Unless it was written by some college grad who had the theory but no real world, hands-on.
