17x11 Ronal R15s - Done!

I don't post here much - but figured you folks would appreciate this information. Weldcraft did the work. These were modified for our wagon build (http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversion...ion-wagon.html). They started life as legit Ronal R15 17x9.5s not the crappy recast/repops. These might be the only set of 17x11 R15s in the world (this is the internet and someone will take exception to the statement and make the effort to prove me wrong). The only reason these could be widened to the outside is because they are a "reverse mount" style wheel and have a non-stepped lip.

We will be mounting 345/40R17 Toyo TQ drag radials on them.

Thats awsome!! And your wagon is a really cool ride!!!
I have often wondered about widening rims... if it was worth it ($) or if it could be done quality wise. I have heard of Weldcraft, and also Greens out west.

Those look great though!!!

Re: 17x11 Ronal R15s - Done!

The pic didn't live up to the idea. It'd be more impressive, and stealthy, to add the width to the back side then use spacers.
If I was widening, I'd go at least 11.5, maybe 12.

So go through all the effort and still have to use spacers? That makes sense....
OP, the wheels look awesome!

Re: 17x11 Ronal R15s - Done!

Those do look awesome! ....I checked out Weldcraft, and their FAQ. One thing I didn't see was strength. I'm no fab expert, but it seems sketchy. I've thought about doing it to widen some aftermarket Irocs.

Anyone have any concerns with strength???

Should be fine, the original wheel is the weak point here anyway since they are cast or low pressure cast (not sure) and not forged.

I had my rear irocs widened about 4 years ago, and zero issues. The welding was pristine. Was very pleased with their work.
And I do drive the car very hard.

Re: 17x11 Ronal R15s - Done!

That's good to hear. ...I've considered widening a set of 17 or 18 inch Irocs so I can run larger tires. Irony is I don't care about the 16" diameter, but the 8" width is a killer. ....and even the aftermarket Irocs are only 8".

I know right 8" is a bummer would be cool to see wider and maybe different concavity

Re: 17x11 Ronal R15s - Done!

I paid around $240 per wheel back in 2010 to have two 19 x 9.5 wheels widened to 13". Prices depend upon the size of the wheel and the amount being added to it... call them for pricing.

Re: 17x11 Ronal R15s - Done!

Finally got them back after 2 months at the refinisher. FML. Anyway, the tires are 345/40R17 and have a mounted section width of 13.5"; and that's that.

You did great with the fitment. I think if you would have painted them a cast aluminum color people like me (with no idea what the stock wheel was) would be fooled until the width was seen from the rear.

Worth looking into if I can grab a cheap used set of aftermarket IROC knockoffs.

Thanks! I am pretty much a master of wheel and tire fitment. I did not want the tires poking out past the fender arches. I could have had my S60 built 1/2-1" narrower and had a little more room to play as there is still a fair amount of room toward the frame.

The wheels come with a machined diamond finish - too blingy for my taste. The black paint really mutes the width of the wheels - but, from behind there is no hiding the meats.

I understand the rear end is not in a thirdgen, but what width is the rear axle?

Re: 17x11 Ronal R15s - Done!

The rear is a Strange S60 set up at the stock G-body width and has axle tube flanges for LS1 discs. So it is about 52" flange to flange, IIRC.
