WOT extended

WOT is WOT, right?.
Well, not really.
And for the sake of this thread I'm talking about street class cars and cars with mufflers. Catalytic converters are not covered in this, as they have their own special needs.

If your at WOT for more then a few seconds, two things happen.
1) Temps will build.
2) Areo loads increase.

As far as temps.,
There are some items usually glossed over.
The cooling system's major load at high engine loads is the cooling area around the exhaust valve. The easiest way to get a glimpse at the issue is to look at the NASCAR way of redirecting coolant so as to best acheive this in the pre GENII engines. They've even gone to equal spacing on the exhaust ports to get the siamesed pair divorced from each other.
The EGTs take a while to stabilise. You can flash a motor into a high HP condition, to get impressive readings but that doesn't mean the engine can generate those some high numbers for any signifigant period of time. ie while a restrictor plate NASCAR engine only makes 650, and some street engines can chassis dyno a 650. The NASCAR engine can go 500 miles at the HP rating. There is a huge differnece in at least my mind between 5 secs at 650, and 500 miles at 650 HP.
Then we have oil temps., Aside from the heat of providing lubrication, at sustained WOT, the underside of the piston gets toasty warm. This also drives heat into the oil. So what you say, well the thing is some oil starts to vaporize at high temps, and some can leak thru the PCV. Oil has very poor detonation resistance. Well you say it should leak past the PCV. It's a weighted slug. Well there are some other issues, ie vibration can rattle the PVC off of its seat. Also there is a hurrican of air movement in the crankcase. ie reading up on the newer LS1 blocks and what they found is an interesting read on the matter.

So what can be done to correct all this?.
Several patches come to mind.

No computer models were injured in these tests.
Again, off highway use info..
Not to be attempted without adult supervision.
YMMV.
High speed testing is NOT to be taken lightly.

This is just brought to you as an exercise in understanding engine management.
