Depending on how many RPM's you want to spin, it really depends. The 274 is going to be a much more aggessive cam due to the faster ramp speed it is going to come on early and pull strong due to the split duration and fast ramp speed. I think the 274 is the way to go. With 1.6 rockers, it will put your lift at .519/.523 which will give you a little more torque and horse power. The 89 vette shortblock is a roller cam block, you can run a regular cam but you must go to standard length pushrods, maybe even .100 longer due to the 1.6's. Good Luck
I've got the XE 274 cam in the shortblock I just brought home today.
It's gonna be a while before I get the thing all the way together, but I'll pass on what I know about it..
On a 350 the XE 274 cam is only expected to pull 11- 12.5" of vacuum, so the Power Accesories are not gonna like that. The Idle will be Choppy to rough, and because of the 106 Centerline it's gonna pull Very Hard in the midrange, and run outa steam above 6000rpm, if the heads let it rev that high.
The lift on the DEH 275 is.462/.482 with 1.5 rockers, it's a milder, older type grind with gentler ramps, Better suited for a car that's more street than track. Has better Vacuum.

What do you mean by power accessories? Do you mean brakes? Does that mean I'll have to get a vacuum resevoir? Are they difficult to setup? I estimate the cam will peak hp at 6000rpm with the right set of heads. I don't want to spin over 6500 with the stock short block anyway.

it depends on how much Vacuum the motor pulls at idle.. that cam will put a 350 right on the cusp, if you didn't need it with a 234/234 cam you may not need it with a 230/236 cam.
I doubt a vac canister is very hard to put in.
yep.. Brakes, the AC won't like to work the engine will get real surgy with a rough idle...
if you can get away with it you won't need it..

I don't have A/C so the brakes are what I have to worry about, even though I won't. It should be fine. The 234 cam was just an idea I had. I run the stock roller cam, I think the specs are 202/206 459/473 with 1.6 rockers. Assuming I have the carb jetted I think I'll get about 40hp, what do you think.

Just dawned on me that your 350's a roller block, and the cams you lookin at are Hydraulic flat tappet cams.
Gonna have to change your strategie a bit here.
a Comp cams XE roller cam, or one of thier Magnum Roller's would be what ya needed,
The XR264 would probably be right up your alley it's specs are
212/218 duration. 487/.495 lift with 1.5's .520/.528 with 1.6's.
Nno problems with the brakes and you don't loose much from the low end.
That'll give ya 35-40hp, won't hurt your low end much, and Keep your braakes happy

I know my engine is a roller block. All I have to do is change the push rods for a regular hydralic one. If I stay with the roller one I have to get different lifters because mine are ticking. I'm ditching the roller setup, the power doesn't justify the price with my stock heads. I have confidence this cam will be just fine with what I have. It's not too big, and will work great with some AFR's or Trick Flow 195's probably 430-450hp. Maybe when I get out of college I'll put a roller one in.

I thought the same way you did about putting a roller cam in and now Im kicking myself. gonna swap back to one this winter... it only costs 100 more dollars than the flat tappet and it IS worth it in less friction and faster ramps, do the roller
I priced it out for the hydralic swap to 300 bucks. For the Roller swap lets see:
250 cam
250 lifters
30 pushrods
50 timing chain
15 gaskets
50 springs
+____
645
That's over twice the amount of money for only about 10hp more, not worth the money to me. I could put that 350 bucks towards a set of heads.

Back to part of the original question.
I now have the car running with the XE 274 cam
It's verys treetable the power brakes work, it's got enough vacuum and when it's warm the idles rumpity, and very very stable at 900rpm a bit more lumpy at 750 in gear.
I'm running a 9" converter and the only accesories i've got are the alternator, and the waterpump so i don't have a lot fo parasitic loss.. so on a car with a biger converter and more accessories the vac might be a bit lower.
The Cam, with the vortec heads is STRONG very happy so far. jsut breaking the motor in now.
If i had a roller motor, i'da probably used a roller cam if i had the lifters
if i didn't i wouldn't hesitate using this again.. it's very streetable in mine. barely shakes the fenders.
I run the XE274 in my current 10:1 355 and love it.Hot idle puts me around 11-12.5" of vacuum as said above.I only run power steering/brakes and alternator..no other power accesories...but not a problem ever with my accesories and not enough vacuum. This cam is totally streetable and with my Weiand Stealth/AFR 195's pulls really strong midrange as well as high end and so far it loves the juice which is a nice benefitI have driven my car with this combo for the last two years and have yet to have a single regret about the combo..except this winter I am stepping up some. You know how it goes..once you get what ya want..ya want more damnit.
I am running a 268xtreme cam in my 357, and it only pulls 10inchs of vaccum. still havent figured out whats wrong with it. My buddy has the 274 in his poncho 455 he loves it. Even though that doesnt shed any light on the cam in a SBC.

hey lilJay, I'm not sure about one bad, but i'm running a dual plane performer rpm, looks like your holley intake is the big open plane type.. if so that may be part of the weak vaccum

it looks almost identical to a performer RPM, and i have a stealth hanging on my wall too.
depending on how you have the advance set up.. you should be somewhere around 12-16 degrees initial. I set mine up with about 10 degrees of vac advance at idle. so my total idle advance is somehwere around 30 degrees.out of gear, and a bit less in gear, good smooth idle
