Plugs&wires

Just a quick simple question. Just got an 84 z28. Plugs and wires probably haven't been changed in like 5 years. My engine misses alot, and there just seems to be a big loss of power for such a strong car. The question is #1 is this cause I need new plugs and wires? #2 Which ones would you recomend. Thank you!

Heck yeah that's a problem. You seriously need to check them out. They are probably charred beyond recognition or broke into pieces. I would go with Accel Super Stock wires and AC Delco Rapid Fire plugs. That will help out greatly.

I may not know too much about cars, but I do understand basic electric. Your ignition system is only as good as the weakest link. You can have the best wires, plugs, and coil there is to get, but if your cap and rotor are bad then it won't transfer the full spark to the wire.

If the contacts in the cap are corroded, then most of the energy will be lost in the transfer. If the rotor is bad then it won't properly transmit the electricity to every contact. Both result in mis-fires. but a bad rotor would mean that nearly every cylender would mis-fire. Where as a bad contact in the cap would mean that only specific cylinders would mis-fire. Both of them are VERY cheap parts, just replace them along with the plugs and wires.

thanks man.... my mechanic thought it was my carb (accelerater pump, choke) so i had a rebuilt put in. Didn't work still buped and farted as i accelerated in lower gears. So I guess it is an ignition problem. Everyone around me is in civics, so it's hard to get an educated opinion.

best thing you could do for that car is to do a full tuneup, checkout the tech articles, it lasts all the recommended things that should be done in a tuneup including oil change, oil filter, air filters, plugs, wires, cap adn rotor, adjust IAC, adjust TPS, fuel filter and i think thats all

My car had a miss idle and lousy acceleration when my rotor blew up. Once I replaced it the ride was so much better. Check the contact points on the cap to see if there is any corrosion. Check inside the cap for a lot of black powder marks. If there is that usually means the rotor is gone. The cap and rotor would have a much bigger impact on the missing than just wires and plugs.

I'm also in the market for new stuff. I'm replacing most of the cheap stuff(cap, rotor, plugs, wires, vacum hoses, etc....) on my car while I'm fixing the head gasket.

Personally, I figure I'll just go with the stock stuff, I'm not modding it. But if there's something better for about the same price I'll be all over it.

If you guys have the HEI distributor Accel makes a lot of trick stuff that is relativly cheap. I got a set of super stock wires(20$), a cap and rotor($15) and the super coil($40). I dont know if it helped cause i never drove it before with stock stuff. Oh yea I also got some R44T and R45T AC Delco plugs. the hotter R45T worked a little better for my application. the plugs were only $10 i think.

Well I got my stuff in. Brand new cap, rotor, bosch wires and delco plugs. Rides much better. Not faster, still feels realy slow off the line (automatic) but much smoother ride. Thanks for the help.

Next question

My gears bang into gear, hard. I checked my tranny fluid, but can't tell if I need it. It just goes to the ! pint line. Doesn't have a full line. Any ideas?
