Fiberglas Hood...how about the light underneath?

Hey Guys,

I just bought an ASCD SS Hood for my 91 Z28 (5.7 TPI L98) and the light that's under the hood is really pretty handy... especially at night. I was wondering.....is there any easy way that I can still have this light functional with a fiberglass hood? If anyone has any idea's...let me know. I thought maybe I could run a ground wire and maybe just ground it to the firewall.....but...I would like to here some other opinions. If anyone has any ideas.....post'em! Thanks!!

yeah i would run a ground wire to the firewall.. or a good body ground, just make sure you dont get close to the hinge and somehow mash the wire(s). i wish i had a under the hood light..

I'm having the same dilemma. My 91 camaro had a hood light, but it only came on when the hood was up. How does it know when to come on? I assume it grounded through the hood. So, with a fiberglass hood, if i run a separate ground wire, won't it be on all the time?

I believe that the bulbs are like mercury bulbs....and when the bulb is tilted up... it comes on when you open the hood. Kinda weird huh?

you could always run a switch to it..
thats right mercury bulbs, or something to do with mercury; good call just put the light on the same way it came off the stock hood and work from their..

Kinda like when you were a kid and you always wondered if the refrigerator light stayed on all the time, and IF NOT, then how did it shut off?

Of course I was the kinda kid that got IN the fridge and closed the door just to make sure it actually did go off!!!!!

But yea, the hood light has a mercury switch that turns it off and on. There's a itty bitty tube filled with mercury except for one little spot. They call it a bubble, or sometimes a bubble switch. Mercury conducts electricity. Once the mercury passes over both contacts in the tube, it turns on the light.

There's a similar type of switch on the old round Honeywell thermostats that you use for the furnace in your house. If you pop off the outter ring you'll see what I mean. It's connected to a spring that works similar to a choke coil on a carb. When it gets warmer or colder, the coil spring moves accordingly and the tube moves with it. Whenever the mercury in the tube moves the right way, the heat or the A/C comes on.
