engine rebuilding

i am thinking of rebuilding my engine before i go to college next year. has anyone done this?? is it worth it. how much does it usually run?? better performance? any advice would be great!

1985 z28 w/gm 350/ 330 hp ho deluxe. hedman shorty headers, y-pipe, 3inch catback(no cat with an electronic cutout, running into a magnaflow muffler, raptor 700r4 performance transmission with a 2300 stall and a corvette servo. ss tips, weld prostars. 373's, Metalic black. just added traction bars and hotchkis lowering springs!!!

It would be a great idea and while you are at it you can ditch the 305 and step up to a 350 for probably less cost in the end. If you just want something stock to get you to and from college with some decent power, those target / recon crate motors run around 700 bucks with core and push right around 250 horsepower.

wouldn't it be cheaper to just drop a new one in???this sounds dumb but what can i tell my mom to convince her to let me do this???? i want a new engine but she says it is better to keep my old engine what would i have to change with the new engine??
