A good place to start would be the exhaust, get a set of headers and a good cat back. Most of them out there are good. The mod that I think gives you the most power for the money is getting a new camshaft, it helps tremendously also a good place to look is nitrous.

Is the IROC TPI?
If so, your cam is already pretty hot.
Additionally, the stock computer chip provides an aggressive timing curve and is less sensitive to the knock sensor than later years - hard to improve upon. Don't bother changing either of these. Headers may affect top end but you won't notice a lot on the bottom. Bang for buck:

K&N filters (reusable, not much SOTP)
Advance static timing 6 deg. (free)
Cat-Back
180 deg stat.
TTA or Hypertech Aux. fan switch

If your gear ratio is less than three to one, change it! (I'm not sure what the non Borg-Warner ratios are)

If not TPI, the above will still help.
Don't get sucked in by Rapid-fire plugs, air foils, etc. Even your stock plug wires are more than adequate (unless they're hashed)

Good Luck!

p.s. Don't overlook the simple things - do a thorough tune-up.

IROC Z Z28,

Take some time and check out the tech section and FAQs accessible thru the home page. You can do a search on "timing" (from the message boards) and get the details. Of course, I don't have every detail about your car. How much you advance the timing will depend on the condition of your engine, what gas you use, what temp. it runs at (get the fan switch and thermostat!), etc. Go to Amazon.com (or Summit or Jeg's) and buy a book or two on TPI Fuel Injection (John Baechtel wrote a good one but its title escapes me).

I think you can decode the RPO codes (?) found on a sheet affixed inside your console to find your gear ratio (not sure on this one - I bought mine new so I have all the original documentation) Hopefully, somone else can pipe up on this.

All in all, you can get details on all of my suggestions thru the search function. Of course, you can also pose each as an individual question.

By the way, welcome to the wonderful world of thirdgen.org!

Ya, Greg is right. Take a look in or under your center console lid/glovebox. Look for the RPO sheet and write down all the codes you find. There should be a bunch. Come back to your computer and go to the RPO decoder and type in all your codes in the boxes. You should find one that says something like [ peformance axle ratio ] and tells you the ratio. G92 means positraction. This is also a good way to find out what alloptions your Iroc had from the factory. I found out some valuable info when I did this with my numbers. As far as the hi-po add-ons go, give the car a good tune-up first. Make sure it is running to the best of its stock-form ability, then from there you can go any number of different ways. I went with the new Flowmaster 80 first, then added some internal motor mods. You can do alot just from the outside though if your motor is in good running shape and doesn't need a rebuild. Try the headers, K&Ns, cat-back system { I recommend Flowmaster's system }, and other mods to the TPI setup and the ignition system. Let us know how some of your mods turn out when you get done.

Is this a question or are you letting everyone know you don't know what a "peanut cam" is?

85 TPIs don't have the "peanut cam". The TPI cars came with 3.2X (most likely) or 3.42 (less likely) gears.
