Zytanium Cross Pin :-( MUST READ IF BUILDING A REAR

One of the tech articles on Thirdgen.org about building your 7.5 10 bolt has some incorrect information! To help the 7.5 take racing abuse it is recommended that a Zytanium Cross Pin from Next Generation (Part #66) be used. The cross pin is too large in diameter to fit into our ring gear carriers. The cross pin is for a 8.5 inch 10 bolt! I am using the Borg-Warner cone posi unit and the Zytanium cross pin from Powertrax did not fit at all. Just a heads up so you don't get stuck with spending 28 bucks for nothing.

I wrote the article you speak of.I used this pin in a Auburn posi, before I went to the Zexel Torsen unit.Maybe it just doesn't work in the paticular type that you have.
It is listed in the Next Generation catalog which specifically lists parts for 82-present f-body cars.An 8.5" diff never came in these cars.

Its probably because you are using a 9 bolt carrier in your 10 bolt. That carrier is a 7.75" rear not a 7.5. If I am wrong somone please correct me.

KwikGTA, what's up! Thanks for responding. My carrier is a ten bolt Borg Warner Cone Type, which is a pre 87 carrier. I believe your research is solid but for some reason the pin does not fit my carrier. Now I will admit that I purchased my carrier from someone with a ten bolt from a Monte Carlo but I know the 7.5 carriers are the same as the Camaros. Maybe my carrier is from a "early" 7.5 rear but I doubt that would change the cross pin diameter. The only difference that I know of in the early 7.5 is the size of one of the pinion bearings. The early 7.5 has a smaller rear pinion bearing. FYI The early 7.5 was from 76-81. I was told my carrier is from an 82 and newer 7.5 rear but I am looking for reasons that the pin does not fit. Maybe the Auburn in the 7.5 is stronger because it has a larger cross pin, which would attribute to the other carriers weaknesses. All I know is that the Borg Warner ten bolt cone type posi unit should be the same from every pre 87 ten bolt. If that is so then some thirdgenners could not use the Zytanium cross pin. Thanks for your input!

Hey Kwik just called Jegs and went to the Powertrax site. The Powertrax part # Next Gen sends under part D66 is SG1920. SG1920 is for a 28 spline 8.5 rear! Jegs has no Powertrax listing for a 7.5 cross pin. Hope this helps. Weird how your pin worked, what awesome luck!

Kwik, FYI there are 3 ten bolt 7.5 inch rear ends. Only two of them came in the 82 and newer Camaros. The 76-81 small pinion bearing 7.5 (mostly G body), 82-mid 80's large pinion bearing 7.5, and the late 80's 7.625 are the three types. It really does'nt matter though because most aftermarket gears are 7.5 anyway and the bearings in the old rears can easily be updated by replacement.

I looked in my Next Gen catalog & it says that the Zytanium cross pin works in 84 thru 96 third & fourth generation 10 bolts.Like I said earlier I had one in my car before I went to the HD Zexel unit.I don't know why it won't fit in your partiular assembly.

The third gen's used the same Borg Warner Cone Posi as the Monte's, so I can not see why there would be a difference. I guess I am just unlucky. Thanks anyway Kwik and long live the Thirdgenners!
