hey, i have a 92 305, i was wondering if anyone objects putting in a hypertech power chip and why? and if i do install the chip, i was told you need to change the thermastat or something like that, is this true? can i just install the chip and thats it or is it more complex than that? does the chip burn more gas as well? please let me know.
I have a 92 RS 305. I bought that exact same chip and it didnt do ****! You are better off gettin a flowmaster muffler or headers. I have heard if you are going to get a chip to burn one yourself. Trust me dont buy it.
I got a 92 RS 305 TBI. I bought a used JET stage 2 chip and it made a big diff. My #s went way down. Gas milage #s that is!!!! I think it made about 1 millisecond diff in my acceleration. I'm glad I paid only $50 to find this out instead of $145 for a new one. I guess I should've questioned why the guy was selling it. DUH!!! 2+2=4. At least I still can do that.

My hepertech chip made a slight difference and didn't hurt my fuel economy. I have a carb though. Also, if it wasn't free, I doubt I would've wasted money on it. Spend the money on something more useful like exhaust or a cam swap.

My speedshop guy recommends getting the chip before doing any other "enhancements" because it will work _with_ any other changes moreso than the stock chip will. You probably won't notice any difference with no other changes, but after headers, cam, intake, whatever, the difference should be greater than without the chip change.
For instance, adding headers will probably give a net gain of 25 hp under testing conditions, with a stock chip, you might see 18-20 of that. With a hipo chip, the whole 25 might be realized. No, you can't tell 5 hp in times or seat-of-the-pants dyno, but more changes will net higher gains.
uner the dash on the passnger side of the car. pull the panel from underneath the dash and you should be able to see the silver box.thats the comp. but i wouldnt waste my money on hypertech.

Kevin91Z is absolutely correct...those "off-the-shelf" eproms are GARBAGE. I have looked at the interal changes of most of the "name brand" eproms versus the stock eprom and they do VERY LITTLE.
They add a couple of degrees of spark advance (which usually triggers knock retard and ends up reducing your effective spark advance) and generally add a little more fuel, which is the LAST THING you need on a basically stock engine as they tend to be overly rich anyways.
If you want to waste your money, for it. But, you would be far further ahead to use that money to buy the equipment to burn your own eprom and GO TO the DIY PROM Board to learn how to do it. Read Traxion's article on "Learning how to Burn an EPROM" on the top of every page on the DIY PROM Board.
If you are too lazy to learn how to do it yourself, then just leave the eprom as is and don't modify the engine.
PS: Anyone who has taken their car to the track with an "off-the-shelf" eprom has NOT had a noticeable gain in performance and often go slower due to too much knock retard.

350 for a custom chip?
You might want to add more details because a blanket statement like that needs validity.
Thanks but no thanks. From what I have read here Im glad I never bought one.
I bought a Hypertech Streetrunner chip and it slowed my times down by 6/10's. I was running a boat load of 16.3's. I was told with my mods (see sig below) that I should have bought the Hypertech Thermomaster instead. Summit Racing allowed me to exchange it without any problems at all! The Streetrunner chip is for the car which there are NO mods and NO future mods.
I put the stock chip back in and ran at the track several passes. My best et was 15.7.
The next week I put the Thermomaster chip in and was running 15.8's. Please not that the temp. etc was the same. I kept my driving variables the same as well.
I have the time slips to prove that the Streetrunner chip hurts performance in even a slightly modded car such as mine. The Thermomaster chip neither helped nor hindered performance. I will see if I can run a 15.7 again this time using the Thermomaster. If not, then I guess that chip robbed me of 1/10th.
After talking with other people at the track, 2 of them had the same problem with that chip in their modded cars.
My advice, advance your timing and forget the chip for now. Once you are pretty much done with mods, have one customed burned to meet your demands. They are much more money but it will be burned to match your car to gain performance.

Actually, if you took the time to burn your own, the you could notice some gains. I've talked to a number of these "custom prom" burners and the good ones admit that the "right" prom takes a fair amount of "hands on tuning". These guys are good, but they are definitely not cheap. Try $1,000 an eprom.
I can burn a "pretty good" eprom from "specs" but it's just not the same as a "hands on tuning" eprom. Burning an eprom is not that hard. You just have to start "small" and spend some time at it. The nice thing is, once you get the equipment, you can test to your little hearts contend at no extra cost.
Also, there is a lot of other "small things" that may not affect WOT performance but greatly affects driveability (plus emissions and gas mileage if that's a concern). Most "custom proms" address WOT performance but not too much in the "day to day" drivability area.
What good is a "hot eprom" if it makes your engine run like crap at part-throttle? I should add that it is not that they are designed to run like crap, but more that nothing was done for part-throttle. This is a big problem if you have some mods.
