Mobil 1 synthetic

I pulled the heads off my 92 L98 For porting and the guides, cylinder walls and lifters look brand new. The cylinder walls still have cross hatching barely visable on them. The motor has 105K on it. Mobil 1 since has been in it since new. I definately think it's worth the extra $$ over conventional oil.

What type of oil filters are you using? I just switched my 89 T/A 305TBI car over to Mobil 1 this weekend along with a full tune up, trying to get better gas mileage, i am only getting about 200 miles a tank, thats horrible!! I went with a WIX gold filter this time.

Definitly Mobil 1 is worth it. My brother pulled his heads off at 160,000 miles and they looked spotless also.

change your filter every 3,000, but you can get away with full oil change every 6,000 or so (i usually go about 4-5,000 on the oil depending on how much extra cash i have

I change mine every 3,000 with ac delco. I've tried other filters and the ac gave me the best oil pressure out of all of them.

i agree...i have seen some VERY clean engines that were run on synthetic. its amazing how good they look, as long as the oil was changed on a regular basis.

I have Mobil 1 in my 2002 Z-28 and I change it every 7500. You could theoretically change it every year if you wanted to. There are reasons why you can do this but I am not going to bore you with the chemical details of why.

What do you think of using a K&N oil filter with mobil 1 oil? I didn't think the mobil 1 oil filters would be good, cause mobil's expertise was in oil not filtration, but since K&N expertise was in filtration, I figured that would be a good oil filter to get. Plus, they use synthetic media for there filter!! what do you think?

currently running synthetic blend b4 i make the switch to mobil 1. I've heard nothing but good from people who use Mobil1.

What does everyone think of the pure-one filter, the top of the line purolator? I've always used this one but I wonder if the K&N or Mobil 1, or even the AC delco might be better????

I always hear everyone talking about how bad fram is and how good AC is, but I never hear anything about purolator....

I am also interested in some feedback on the pureolator pure oil filters i used them for a year, and they seemed to work good. However, I was using Castrol GTX and changing the oil every 2,500 miles. I will see how bad my heads look in the spring when i change them out for vortecs.

Since I have put Mobil ! in my car it smokes all the damn time. It used to just smoke when it sat overnight(valve seals)now it smokes when you rev it up, or get on it. I know the oil is thinner, but its burning it now. the car has 52,xxx miles on it, I didn't figure it would do that. It's not the oil, its the car.

Synthetic engine oils do not have parafin (wax) in thier base consituents. This lack of wax in the engine oils base gives synthetics less ability to fill in weak seals and build varnish under normal driving conditions. That is why engines stay cleaner internally and they LEAK more. Just change your REGUALR / CONVENTIONAL oil at regualr intervals and their will never really be a problem, especially with keeping the oil in your engine. I had synthetic oils in every system of my vehicle and suprisingly (sarcasm) they all leaked. I changed back to conventional oils and never had a problem and YES all my seals are less than 2 years old and in good condition. The whoping 2 HP the synthetics provide are not worth the leaks to me!

What kind of heads are you running? When I first started running synthetic oil, I too noticed she had started to smoke a lot more than usual. Then I remembered that almost all of the Third Generation F-Body's did not come with Exhaust Valve Seals from the factory (they only came with Intake Valve Seals), and that the Synthetic was so thin.... it was able to by-pass the O-Ring on the Exhaust valve, and make it's way down to the combustion chamber...

The easiest fix for this type of leak from synthetic oils.... is to switch over to an 'umbrella' type valve seal. When I re-did my heads, I utilized Competition Cams 'umbrella' valve seals, installed Royal Purple Synthetic, and haven't had a leak since (going on 3 years now of abusive driving).

Then your seals are not as good as you think. I switch over to syn at 125K and at 151K no leaks no burning no nothing with mobil 1. I kinda guess my 14 year old gaskets are better then your 2 year.

Everybody complains about leaking and this and that. If it leaks with that new of seals it wasnt sealed properly.

I was thinking of getting a FilterMag. Can you tell it is a good product? Have you cut open your filter and seen any metal particles that the magnet picked up? What does other people think of this product? Is it worth it to get? I think it's like $50. Or maybe just getting a filter that filters down to a smaller micron?

I bought mine based on a excellent review in one of the magazines (Chevy High Performance, I think). The FilterMag appears to be a solid product. The price seems a bit stiff, but, on the other hand, this product is good for the lifetime of the car--probably several cars, so in that regard, it's pretty cheap.

I noticed that Wal-Mart is selling its own brand of synthetic oil. Does anybody know who makes it? The container is similar to Mobil-1 (and at $3.01 a quart it is a lot cheaper).

I've heard that changing to synthetic oils can actually clear out junk left by the original oil and it can clog up engine parts. Is there any truth to that?

I heard the same thing. It's only if your motor is really really sludged up, when you put in synthetic it could break off a huge chunk(s) of sludge and clog the oil pump/filter. But that is only in extreme cases.

Since I recently bought my car, I'm currently running synthetic blend before I switch to full synthetic so it's more of a gradual switch and not so sudden, that way theoretically the large chunks of sludge would be much smaller.

I may be paranoid in doing this but I'd rather be paranoid than down an engine....

my 86 always had some oil leaks. But with the miles on the motor, i use the mobil 1 just to buy it as much time as possible. Its been 5 years now, and since the rings were gone, i use 15-50 in it, only smokes on startup. Sometims during the summer, i use some lucas oil additive.

the 91 get mobil 1 5-30 and it has 130,xxx on it. when i pulled the valve covers it was spotless underneath. both cars run smooth as day 1 and the 91 has no leaks. I was using ac pf25 filters and switched over to the larger 35L

I had the 35L, now that AC Delco is pulling out of the retail chains i have to go to the dealer and all i can get is the 1218's. I buy them 4-6 at a time, more than enough for a year on both the cars.

I don't appreciate your snide attitude! Just because you do not know me does not mean I am an idiot, yes I can read between the lines. The seals are from my ZZ4 crate engine that GM manufactured and my TCI transmission! I suppose that neither GM or TCI have a clue. Of course being a mechanic for 9 years would not allow me to develop a good understanding of gaskets, I guess I had better go back to school! The only reason your engine did not leak is probably because you have soooo much cr@p in or on your engine already, you did say 125K+ miles, that water could not get out if it were in the crankcase. I was not trying to bash anyone or synthetics, just trying to give a realistic picture of a worse case scenario. Not generalizing by saying my engine has "this" and "this" must apply to everyone else, like yourself.

I have had problems with several engines I've switched over to Mobil 1 developing new oil leaks. Consequently I no longer use it.

I use Amsoil instead, and run their filters exclusively. I change the oil every 8,000 miles and it still looks nice and amber. I love the quality of the Amsoil products. I've done a lot of research into oils, and the formulation of Amsoil is better than any other brand I've seen.

You can get really fancy with the oil and the price can vary so much. Everyone also make so many kinds, high mile, 4x4, V-twin, racing, ect.....

I think the V-twin is just a good syn that has none of the crap that reg syn has that can kill a clutch, in a wet clutch system.

Anyone tried the mobile 0-50 yet???
Its use in most of the top end sports car.
Foreign and domestic.

Anyone know what that oil is/has in it that shell sells for $30 a quart???

Comes in the Enzo Ferrari and must be used or it voids the warranty???

Mobil 1 finally

Just changed my oil today, put in mobil 1(10w30) for the first time. No leaks at all, and no smoke at all. So far so good! Car previously run on durablend semi synthetic 10w30. Car has 101k. I'm still waiting for feedback on the purolator "pure one", I always use this filter. It's the best one purolator makes. Anyone???

i've been using them since i bought the car (75k miles) car now has 180k, no problems, had mobile 1 synthetic and pure one filters as long as i have owned it. still runs strong, i drag race, auto-x and flag the car on the weekends.

I use the Mobile 1 synthetic filter. They really work. When I first got my car they cleaned out the crap big time. Think I changed it twice per oil change ofr a while. I also run magnets on my filter, oil pan, rear end, fuel filter, anywhere I can stick em.

CONSIDER IT ENGINE INSURANCE!

Allthough not my first choice in the job world i currently change oil at a wal-mart tire and lube express. i see about 80 oil changes a day and mobil 1 is without question superior to all othe motor oils. but dont be so quick to write off conventional oil. mobil's conventional oil is probably ALMOST as good as the synthetic, but not quite. if yor like me and change your oil every chance you get, conventional would be fine. if you plan on going to 3000 or dare i say beyond, then synthetic would be the better bet. im hard on my engine so every chance i get the oil is changed. id say on an avererage of 1 to 1 1/2 months or maybe 500 miles, overkill? yeay probably. but when youve seen oil come out of cars that looks like what ive seen you really question it.

the difference between a motor that sees 150,000 miles and 300,000 is 3,000 miles, get it?

Shade tree

Well you are half right. wal-mart will hire anybody for this job. HOWEVER - almost 2 weeks is spent inside doing C.B.L.'S
(COMPUTER BASED LEARNING) AND EVEN AFTER THAT, a tech must be certified, this requires hands on training with your mananger before you can ever work on the underside of a vehicle by yourself.
HERES THE FUNNY PART! only a retarded manager woould hire someone without any knowledge or mechanical abilitys, everyone in my shop has either been a mechanic (like me) or is a "shade tree mechanic" the hring process can sometime bring a lesser experienced person into the shop, but befiore they ever get close to the underside of a car they will be weeded out.
as for the union portion of your question, Wal-mart says they are not anti union,,,, they are just pro people. thats a laugh. they are just afraid they might have to pay us more if we were union. to my knowledge there are a few individual stores that have unionized but none in my area have so my knowledge in that field is limited.

If Walmart went union it would ruin them. They could not afford to stay the low price competitor. I and everyone else in the world do not want to pay higher prices. And unions are still to much thought of as organized crime. Sure they get you a bunch of money but what they get is even bigger. Its a hard part of the choice. Sure you get lots more money but the union gets even more and that is the only motivation they have.

we shouldn't even need unions / we need something similar that is fair. company makes lots of money, workers make lots of money. unions are out of business.

If a cashier at Kroger's get $17 hr why doesn't one at MC Donald's??? both job can be done by a monkey.

Ohh and through all the oil topics on the site why is there never a mention of Exxon superflow??? If anybody knows oil its Exxon.

I have used superflow 20/50 for a long while with good success. That and mobile 1 filters.

JAMES BOND

As luck would have it i normally leave my spy gear at home when i go to work. i live in newport tn, not far from you. i have also been urinated on by wal-mart. they have tried to fire me several times. however i have gone over everyones head and gone straight to regional management. now im pretty much left alone.
i try to be careful because i have a wife and kid, and most importantly, a trans am. they need my support, so i bite the bullet and go to hell, ummm i meant work, everyday. ill agree with you its all b.s., they have raised there insurance to 280 a month for a family. at 7.30 an hour you tell me where that fits in the budget. people talk about microsoft forcing products down there throat. but nobody ever mentions that wal-mart ruins good hard working people and nearly forces them into poverty. just remember when you go to NAPA to buy your new starter that wal-mart owns them to. john deer medical, yeah wal-mart owns a controlling share in them to. funny that the same companys wal-mart offers insurance with just happened to be controlled by good ole wally world. and oh yeah mobil oil is goooooood. goes down smooth and doesnt taste like other diet oils.

GENERIC SYNTHETIC

ACTUALLY it is made by havoline. about 4 years agos wal-mart ditched quaker state. im not sure as to whether it is any better or worse than havoline but i would guess its pretty good as wal-mart trys to stay away from putting there label "super tech" on inferior brands. look at jensen, couldnt make a stereo worth a poo, wal-mart ditched them and now they are in chapter 7.

hostile takeover

I dont know the exact share as that is not disclosed, i do know they own a controlling share so i would assume that means quite a bit,, i tire to get tenn care but they said my wife and i make to much. i should get fired so i can work under the table and get unemployment and get tenncare, lol.
anyone know a good trick for removing an oil tube that broke off at the block. there is no material there to grab and im not pulling the motor out and pan off to tap the d@mn thing out.
