That looks nice. Please get it on, let us all know how it went, if anything is close and all that. And please get a couple pics of it on the car. Can't wait to see it in person when it gets here.

Wow, I'm glad I stumbled across this thread! My 9-bolt cover has been leaking from the rubber fill plug for a long time now, not to mention, it's rusty and looks like crap. I've looked all over for a replacement, but couldn't find one - until now .

Add me to the "definite" list for a cover and stud kit! My only regret is that I didn't find this a few hours earlier, so I could order it now!

Anyone know if they're open for business on Monday (Memorial Day)?

EMAILED TO ME: Just got off the phone with Mike at TA and he mentioned the next batch of girdles will come with gaskets and he also mentioned one must remove the bearing caps and using a belt sander or similar device smooth out the bearing caps in the area the girdle's "foot" will contact each cap. I don't know if they mentioned this to you but I thought you would want to know since you have one on the way. I was not going to order the stud kit but if we have to remove the bearing caps anyway I WILL order the stud kits. Please let me know and post something
on the board if this is true. Mike mentioned the bearing caps are cast very roughly in this area so it has to be done, let me and all the rest of us know....thanks.

They are rough and there is a raised ridge on the back of the cap. The cover however, has the two large feet right over these. I just ran a file over them and threw it on. The load bolts are only torqued to 5 ft.lbs.
You can do what I did, You could do nothing, You could remove the caps and put them in a mill, take the ridge off and then take a few more thousandths to make a nice little mating surface for the T/A cover. It's up to you and I know how some off the guys are on these boards (perfection at any cost) Just keep in mind that the load bolts are only brought down to 5 ftlbs. Any more than this will put unessasary force on the cap and could cause premature failure of the bearing. The cover is there as a brace and only comes into play when high horsepower and/or hard acceleration causes deflection or distortion of the rear differencial and it's components.
Keep this in mind when installing your cover and let your own common sense dictate the direction you take.-Mike

Thx , Mike.

Sounds like you did it right and like you said five foot pounds ?
You installed the stud kit ? Do you think the stud kit is any stronger than the factory bolts, in your opinion ?

Thanks Mike. Looks like I'll be taking the safe route and only remove a RCH of material with a file.

Thanks for the pics also.

Bill E.

5 ftlbs. There are instructions with the kit, Studs are almost always better than the standard bolts and it takes 5 minutes to install.

Good things come to those who wait....

Hey guys,

Just took my 'Bird for a cruise today (rare event) and decided to pop in here on this thread. Whaddya know!!

Just placed my order for the cover and stud kit. Was told it now comes with a gasket and hardware. They have received around 100 orders so far. Price was still $159.xx plus the stud kit.

Yo Tom!
Glad to see you back on the board. I've been meaning to send you an e-mail update on this thread. I know you were wanting a cover for the Formula.

By the way, we're auto-xing at Fontana on June 26th, in case you're up for blowing a little dust off the car.

I just called TA to find out when I could expect the rear cover and was told they have all the castings but are still machining. They expect to be caught up with all backorders in another week. Punctual no, but at least they're consistent! I was told on 9May it would be ready in a week...hmmm Just thought I'd update everyone.

Hi I don't participate much in the conversations on the board.I'm more of a lurker but I have been waiting for this cover for a very long time. I have ordered one about two weeks ago and have not been charged for it yet . But i'm waiting for it anxiously. Thanks Dave S. P.S. Looking for some help with tuning as the 406 has just been installed, any help appreciated.

TA Perf just told me today it would be 2-3 weeks to get a batch of covers shipped. This is the same thing they told me a month ago. Oh, well at least they are working on it. I think the guy said his name was Jan that I spoke with. I asked to be notified when it actually ships he said rather than try to contact everybody one at a time they would more than likely put up a post to let everyone know when they are going out. I hope it's sooner rather than later I'm eager to get this rear put in the car.

OK my nine bolt cover showed up today. UPS required a signature and no one was home to sign for it. Should have it in hand tomorrow. Bottom line is they are shipping and if you have one on order you should have it soon. Allen

Hi,

Well finally

Got my Cover and stud kit.
$209.90 with shipping. Looks real good!

Really going to compliment my Gold Spohn suspension pieces,
and maybe just maybe keep this 9-Bolt togeather behind a pretty
good horse.

Thanks to those that kept pushing them

Make sure you specify credit card or COD. I told them to charge my card but just found out they sent it COD instead. Not that big of a deal but wasn't plannin on paying 200 cash tomorrow.
So, when they call to tell you it is shipping out (nice personal touch IMHO) make sure to ask. I just hope it doesnt cost more to get it COD.
Just wanted to let you guys know.
Been a long wait, I am impressed they came thru.

Sweet, that means I should be getting mine soon too hopefully! I just bolted the axles and backing plates up on my new 9 bolt rear end. I'll be going to a 9 bolt posi with PBRs instead of a 10 bolt open with cast iron calipers, should be a nice step up! Can't wait to get my cover from TA!

As for a parts source for 9 bolt stuff, Here's another place that lists quite a few parts: http://shop.store.yahoo.com/ratech/79bogmax.html

I don't understand why TA would send it COD if you called them with your credit card number. It does cost more for a package to be sent COD. The UPS fee for COD is $7.50. You should call TA performance and get the new total incuding S&H and COD fee for your order. Also make sure they didn't specify that the COD fee must be paid by a cashiers check or MO. You don't want to have and make a rush trip for a MO.

Received my cover today, and yes it is a beauty.

One thing that no one else has mentioned, and is also a beautiful sight, is the threaded Fill Plug, Threaded Level Plug, and A drain plug - Finally.

For sale: a rubber plug - ha, ha.

I ended up not putting mine on yet. The brake swap ended up taking longer than expected (almost 11p.m. last night) so I just decided to wait a week or two and powdercoat it before installing. It'll make it easier to keep clean anyway.

My parking brake works great now, though.

"I don't understand why TA would send it COD if you called them with your credit card number"
I know. I called and they said they didnt know why either. Dude told me that they do have my credit card # on file, but didnt charge it.
"The UPS fee for COD is $7.50."
That blows!!! They told me the total and about the MO when I called them back. Although they forgot to mention the COD charge.
Well it should be here Monday.(Fed Ex STINKS)At least around here.
They look pretty nice from the pics so far.

Hi guys. I recieved
my cover yesterday. It looks as if it will do the job nicely. The bearing cap bolts were not in the box. I called right away and they said they would ship them priority mail. They seem like very good people to deal with. Thanks for the work involved in getting the part into production. Dave

One thing I have been thinking about - Is there any way to hang the original posi lube tags on the new covers? I just thought for nostalgic purposes it would be nice to still have them. If there is not a very decent way to re-attach them, maybe the tags will be left off - oh, well.
