You've all seen the infomercials. Its that one size fits all socket. It seems like it might break if you had to break a bolt loose or something. Still might be a big time saver if it worked. I hate getting out from under the car to go search through the tool box for a socket.
I don't think it will work. I think it will want to slip up over the head of the bolt. It will only work on items that go way up inside of it. I could be wrong though. Post yor results.

You may be right about Sears part, but I doubt it. The Gator Grip has been around for about 10 yrs. If Sears hasn't done anything like it yet, then they ain't gonna.
Although I can say that I bought my Metrinch set about 6 yrs ago, and it was about 1 yr & 1/2 ago that Sears decided to carry them. At first I got the "You bought that junk?" from all my friends. But then when Sears started carrying it, they had a different outlook on Metrinch.
The gatorgrip looks cool enough for most easy jobs. The problem from the commercial that I saw was that it may be difficult sometimes to put the gatorgrip over what you're turning perfectly centered. If it's slightly off center the gatorgrip will still hold the nut/bolt/etc. fine but when you turn it you'll get that slight wobble off center feel. You can even see it on the commercial happening. Other then that it seems pretty decent.
That thing wouldn't last a day in my toolbox.... It looks like a cheap POS that is good for the wife to use on odds and ends around the house and that is about it. That thing would clog up with $hit so fast in an automotive environment.... And the first time you actually attempt to use some force on it, I can see little pieces of Gator Grip flying all over the place..... It just ain't gonna cut it in the real world, IMO.... Besides, once you work on enough cars and other mechanical things - your eyes get 'calibrated' and you can tell what size a bolt is just by looking at it - or you just remember from the last time you took it apart. And if it saves you time because you don't have to search for sockets, that only means you need to organize your tools better - or you need a bigger, better toolbox....

I was gonna say something similar. It wouldn't last working anywhere under a car. Maybe a few things up top (like they show in the commercial), but I imagine most of the bolts inside the car are too small for it to work ok. But under a car you get grease and oil all saturated with dirt, sand, mud, tar, you name it. Besides, like Matt said, you get to know the bolt sizes once you've worked around the car enough, and organization is key.
Ya know, that's exactly what all my buddys said about the Metrinch stuff. Boy were they wrong.
I can't imagine using it to change a starter or swaping to headers, etc., etc. But I think it'll be OK to use it to like put together a new swing set, or a batt. powered race car for my son. That's all I want it for.
It might work well for changing the batt. in your car, or removing the TB, you know, little jobs.
One thing for sure though, I know it isn't made to use on nuts that are on long bolts/studs. I imagine with the little needle thingies in there, there's a depth limit to how far they'll sink into the socket.
As I said, ONE OF THESE DAYS when I get mine, I'll let you know if my wife wasted my money.
I have one and its a big time saver for certain things but like all tools it has its limits, it worked great for titening my exaust manifold bolts and changing my fan motor, saved time because i couldn't see what size the bolts were but it works fine
