Hurst Dual-Gate

Hey guys. I've been following these boards for a while, but this is my first post. Just wonderin'...has anyone installed a hurst dual-gate shifter in a firebird with the factory console??

If so please let me kno how the install went. Thanx a lot!

A friend of mine put one in a '84 T/A. It looks great... but he told me it was a major PITA to get it in there right. It is doable, but it ain't easy.

Well, I can definetley say it was a majore PITA. But, it is worth it. 455TA, I noticed that you say you have an 86 TA. I don't think it will work in your car because of the change in consoles in TAs after 84. Just thought I'd let you know.

Is it worth it?

Have you ever driven with one? Personally when I had one in my 72 Cutlass I thought it was pretty pointless. I liked the megashifter much better. But to each there own.

I did it the easy way. I had bought the shifter, but had to wait to put it in. As luck would have it, I was putting the car in for some major work... engine swap, so I added that install to the list so a professional (i.e. not me ****ing it up for hours till I got it right) could do it. Even he told me it was PITA to do... but, it cost peanuts. Only a couple bucks tacked to the overall price... well worth it.

You have to practice with it before you will be any good at shifting it. You have to push it to the right, then shift into the next gear. Then ease off and you will hear/feel a click, then you push to the right again and shift up, then repeat. But if you don't push it to the right, you will overshift since 1st and 2nd gears are so close together. But once you get used to it, it is great.

How easy is the Megashifter to install? I've heard that's worse than the Hurst... I like that the Hurst supposedly uses the factory cables...but, I'am interested in both for a future mod on my Z..

My Dual Gate 2, bought from Jegs, also come with a new cable that was used. I was having problems with my stock shifter right before I put the new shifter in. And I just didn't trust the stock cable anymore.

I had a dual gate once in a Ford and it never worked right. I tried and tried and tried to get it adjusted to work right and never did.
