Speed Pro Hypertectic VS Keith Black Hypertectic

I am rebuilding my motor and running nos, its a street daily driver, but I will be hosing it with a 125 shot. I do not want forged because they are not as ideal for street. My question is are Speed pro's hypertectics any good? Or is keith black the man?

None of the above. If you HAVE to use Hyperutetic, then use TRW's. Just as good, and often cheaper.

I would go with the Keith Black Silver O Lite pistons. They are great pistons for the money ya pay and their affordable. They are also the lightest hypertectic piston on the market I belive.

Every Nitrous Manutfacturer page out there recomends forged pistons. There IS a reason for that.

The only reason I really want to use hypers is because I have read that they are better for longer street use because forged pistons have a wider clearance which can cause ringwear and leakage in long term use.The tight fit makes ur rings seat and last longer. Are the forged pistons in summits rebuild kits any good?

And yes they can be used with nos, but they are not as strong as forged. U can use cast pistons with nos with no prob, as long as you dont exceed 100 HP.

Brandog,, Let me save you some grief. If you're going to run nitrous -- go with forged pistons. Scoggins has the TRW Forged L2256F-30 (.030 over 350 piston) for $182. Not bad for a piston I know can handle in excess of 250 horses worth of nitrous!!! Pretty cheap insurance in my book.

Thanks for the advice, I called summit and they use TRW forged pistons in their 400 dollar kit, Its a steal and I am going to use it. I didnt think my budget could afford forged, but they will be better for nitrous, and cost the same as KB hypertectics. Forged is how I am going to go. Thanks for the advice yall.

I don't normally post on this board since I have a Vette, but since I have some first hand knowledge on this subject I though I'd share it.

Actually, the two types, hypereutectic and forged, have about the same hot running clearance. The differences are that the forged pistons expand a great deal more from their cold state to their hot running condition. HyperUs, on the other hand, don't expand nearly as much and so require much tighter piston to wall.

HyperUs are much quieter during cold start operation. I've read this over the years and experienced it first hand when I switch from a 355 with KB hyperUs to my 415 with forged TRWs. The TRW's are truely noisey at cold start up, but once they reach operating temp I can't tell any difference between the two types.

There are a few guys on the CorvetterForum board who have posted horror stories about using the KBs and one machine shop owner showed a forum member a basket full of failed KB HyperUs, saying they are "junk".

I ran them for a couple thousand miles without a problem and, believe me, I work my engine every chance I get.

KBs do call for a much wider end gap on the top compression ring, in the area of .0055 per inch of bore and with the contemplated use of nitrous, the gaps have to be even wider than that. Something just over .030 if I recall the spec sheet correctly.

I believe you'll find that HyperUs are not recommended for nitrous use. They are very unforgiving to detonation. Since you plan to spray, I'd strongly recommend forged pistons.

If memory serves - which it more often doesn't now since I'm getting old - Speed Pro HyperUs don't require the wide ring gaps. Check their site to be sure.

Hope this helps.
