Wow you saved me $40! I was about to buy that. It is no big deal since it is pretty easy to cut down the one it comes with.

Yeah, I was disappointed to find out. How would you easily shorten the stick that comes with it? I have already cut an inch but want it a little shorter still. I would see how to do it but the stick get narrower right after the threads.

I don't have it near me so I cannot say for sure. Since you cut off an inch what is your thread depth right now? Can you go a little lower so that the knob screws down more? Have you though about switching knobs? That can easily change the height by a lot. However, if you are still running the stock knob you can't get much lower than that.

I'm running a Long verti-gate in the race car on the Jerico...Man I love that thing... not a comparable shifter to an internal-rail type though. - any how much of it depends on how you drive. I went from a B&M to a modified Steeda Tri-ax(basically the same as a pro-5.0, but my trans is upright...) I love it now, but it was hard to get use-to. With the B&M you have to push forward AND over for 3rd, with the 5.0 you just push forward. If you're use-to one style, the switch makes for some missed gears until you get use-to it. - as for throw length, mine's a little shorter than a stock 5.0 because of using a modded mustang shifter. I've never missed a gear, and I don't clutch....

How about the Mcleod Slick Stick. I have one cause Mcleod is a sponsor of mine. Just to let you know mine was givin to me in the raw then i went and made it the way you see it. They come from mcleod with a red base and gold shifter. I think you can get them from any autherised Mcleod Dealer. I'm not sure of exact pricing but know they retail for over $200+.

The revival of this topic was timed perfectly. I'm in the market for one of these right now. But after 19 years with my stocker, whichever shifter I choose will be a HUGE improvement, so my decision will be based on using the one that lets me keep my stock knob and boot for a stock appearance...

The 5.0 works with the stock knob, correct? But Hurst makes no mention of that for theirs, stating only that it comes with a black knob, leading me to believe that it does not work with the stock knob. Anyone know this for sure?

The Hurst stick is already black, whereas I'd have to prime and paint the 5.0 stick, which would be ok.

And thanks to Shifty's link, there's Lou's short sticks, which come in black AND retain stock knobs. But apparently one is not available for the 5.0/T-5? He makes an angled one for the Hurst/'93+ V6/T-5. Yet Hurst uses the same straight stick/part number for both, the '93+ V6/T-5 AND our T-5. Hmm, weird.

So for a shorter stick, from what people have said and from how it appears in pix, the 5.0 has tall enough threads that could be cut down, leaving about 1/2", which is about all our stock sticks have anyway.

So to have it all, I'd need the 5.0, cut/shorten the stick from the top, then paint it satin black. I'll have a short stick(not too short), an even shorter throw(by default), and basically a stock appearance.

Did I miss anything? Thanks to everyone for helping me make this decision, lol.

I thought I'd read many threads on here of people using a lou's short stick on their pro 5.0 on t5's.

I just installed a Hurst in my car today. I have no experience with the 5.0 and my only experience with B&M is the mega shifter I had in another car.
LAFireBoyd..the factory knob won't fit the Hurst without a bushing. there is considerable difference in the size of the shafts.
I only put about 5 miles on the car with the new shifter but I am very impressed so far. I don't slam my car through the gears so having one built like an Abram tank isn't important.
However smooth shifts and a short throw are important and the Hurst does both very nice.

Get the pro-5.0 it is without a doubt the best shifter i have ever seen let alone being the best for our cars. i had one in my bird. HUGE difference. it takes a little getting used to, you dont have to move it right to left. you just have to kinda "think" about what gear you want to shift to, and just push it up or pull it back. its that simple. takes some getting used to, but when you get the hang of it you can SLAM through the gears and never miss a shift.

pro-5.0 dont waste your money on anything else. and when i ordered mine through thunder racing it was on my doorstep 3 days later!

thunder racing gets my official

I put a T56 in my car, and the stock shifter was surprisingly not bad! I used it for awhile, until I felt a friends Pro 5.0 in his 02 WS6 Trans Am, and that was it...I had to have one! Im a frugal buyer, so I didnt buy one right away. I eventually found one on ebay! I paid $100 shipped for it, and then sold the leather Hurst shift knob for $20, so essentially I only have $80 into my shifter and let me tell you, it was one of the best investments I've made!

I just had my uncle put a Pro 5.0 in mine this week, and just drove it home last night...what a difference! Shorter throws (positive, but notchy as hell), but there is a slight price to be paid with increased gear chatter and noise...something I was not expecting.

Still worth it, IMO FWIW, a stock T-56 shifter is not NEARLY as bad...I've used the stock shifter on my Z28 for almost 6 years, and have never felt the need to change it...my dad even prefers it to the factory Hurst in his '02 Formula!

After driving around a good 3-4 days with the B&M shifter on my T56...i dont like it. I have used other short shifters on cars and i dont think this one is that nice. I can miss 1-2 very easy and i hate the up and over 2-3 4-5 shifts...

Itll do for now, but in the future im looking for a pro 5.0.

Just thought I'd revive this thread for a little update...

I don't know how the other make's sticks differ in length from stock, but the 5.0's is about 1.5" shorter than the stock stick. If you were to go any shorter than another 1/2" off of that, you'd almost be reaching down inside the console to shift!

So how difficult must it be to shift with Lou's even shorter Short Stick?! It should prolly be called the Stealth Stick, because you'd wonder if it's there at all.

And yes, the 5.0's threads are the same as stock, letting you keep your stock knob. Then from the threads, the stick tapers to a slightly smaller diameter, so your stock boot will work too. But no worries about the boot on that thinner stick... with the knob sitting so much lower, the boot should easily stay up to it.

What do you hate about it? I didn't like my hurst until i removed a spring from each side. A super stiff centering spring is only good for drag racing, it stinks for downshifting or general driving.

It didn't when I got mine several years ago, but I just reused the factory one and it looked like it belonged.

Re: Hurst, B&M, or PRO 5.0 shifter

Not comming with a boot was my only complaint... But I did get a hold of Hurst, ordered one of thiers and used it, put a zip tie around it...

I love the Pro 5.0...

I have one friend who misses 3rd when he drives my car (but he is the same kinda guy that pulls the starter cord 4 feet out when it's only 3 feet long)... I explain, "dude!, You don't have to find 3rd, don't even grab the shifter, push it up from 2nd with open palm, it finds 3rd itself!" Everyone else is smooth as butter... (how ever smooth that is)...

Question, I can transfer my Pro 5.0 T5 to a TKO tranny in the future?

Raf

Re: Hurst, B&M, or PRO 5.0 shifter

Ok, for all of you guys with the 5.0 I have a question. What's the downshifting like? It seems to me that the way it moves from 2-3 would make downshifting more difficult, does it?

Re: Hurst, B&M, or PRO 5.0 shifter

Nope... It has a spring mechanism to go from 2nd to 3rd... you just push forward from 2nd, it self centers and goes to 3rd...

As for down shifting, from 3rd to 2nd, you would half to pull down and over, as with any other shifter, the spring isn't that heavy will it will hinder you...

Re: Hurst, B&M, or PRO 5.0 shifter

I got mine in last night and haven't driven it yet lol. It sure looks heavy duty, when i get that billet knob i'll be shifting one big hunk of billet! Got to drive it today hopefully and get the door panels in.
