B&M megashifter

Has anybody put a B&M megashifter on a 700R4? If you have, tell me if you think it is a lot better than stock and how hard it was to install. Because I am considering on getting one.

I have one in my 89. I really like it I think its much better than the stock shifter. They are not to hard to install. You will have to drill 2 holes to mount the shifter, cut your shifter indicator plate and drill 4 holes to mount the new plate, rerun the shift cable and lengthen wires for your back up lights.

I have one, and I like the peace of mind of not having to worry about missing a gear or overshooting when shifting through the gears which is what I do alot of. Hard to install, no not bad at all, just follow the instructions..

I have it installed in my 92 Camaro. It is a nice peice. I like the handle on it and the ratchet shifting part is really nice so you know you hit each gear and not miss one.

I just put one in my 86 iroc and it's awesome.Fits and looks real good.Way better than the stock. It was so easy to skip a gear before. It's now impossible. If you take your time and follow instructions it's not to bad.Might take a bit to adjust the cable perfectly. The wiring was a little tricky. There's two switches to mount on the side of the shifter(Reverse lights and neutral safety switch)make sure the back up light is stacked on the top.If not you'll find your back up lights coming on in every gear.I found the switches also need to be spaced away from the shifter the perfect amount and then tightened so there not constantly depressed.Good luck.

Funny that you say that, we just broke the unbreakable hurst shifter right below the handle in my friends car. Snapped right in half and cut up my buddies arm. Good to see that Hurst, along with B&M, is going to replace the shifter for free.

Ah man, don't worry about it. They are all just freak accidents. I don't care how good a product is, in this case shifters, 1 is gonna break. If your gonna live your life worry'n if it's gonna break or not, you need to sell all your stuff and become a monk!

Really though, both peices are good quality, you just gotta go with what you like. For all we know the Hurst unit may be better quality than the B&M shifter but in the end, are you really gonna be happy with one that you don't like the look of? If this was a racecar, that would be different, but since this is mostly a daily driver, get the one you want.

i dont exactly get the ratchet shifting concept tho.....im really thinking about getting a b&m one also but my main concern is that by manually shifting the automatic, will this harm it? i want it mainly so i can shift when i want to. i would be worried about if this will ruin my tranny......any extra info would be awesome!

You can still shift normally say from park to drive then back to park, just like normal. You don't use it like a manual.Where the ratcheting comes in is say when you shift down to first all you do is bump the shifter with the palm of your hand to go to second gear and that's as far as it will go,then bump it again to go to the next gear,no chance of going too far say to 3rd gear.it will only slam up one gear at a time.Once your in drive you have to pull the trigger up to shift to reverse or park. It's a solid, very positive shift between gears.I love it.

I have the MegaShifter in my 1991 Camaro, I would have to say that I love it. I love just pushing the shifter forward with little touch as it goes right into the next gear.

I just installed one in my 86 Z. I put in in just because it looks so much better than the factory setup. I don't race it so I will probably never use the ratchet part.

I would like to buy the ratchet shifter seeing as how I love to drive through my gears in my car. I am gonna be putting in a corvette servo and some other stuff to boost my tranny a bit.

I will install the transgo shift kit. The ratchet shifter, does it basically allow you to hold onto your gears a bit longer. Is it what they say a manual based automatic shifter?

Like I said before, I like to ride out my gears a bit longer just because I can. But my number one problem with that is that I always start from first then mistakenly shift into like 3rd.

It depends on your shift plate. The kit comes with a template you will use to cut the stock plate. Once it's cut out, then the B&M plate mounts on top of it. I can't remember exactly since it's been along time but basically your leaving roughly 1/4 to 3/8 inch of material around the original plate. If you search the web there is a complete walk through on how to install it. I even think there is a link somewhere in the archives..

Here is this one:

What makes you think he wouldn't worry about burning the Abbey down with an unattended candle?

I've got a Megashifter in a1993 Caprice wagon. Phsyical installation was a breeze. Electrical switches can be easily broken though, and finding the proper wires under the dash to patch into was a pain, upside down with the doorsill across my back. Unit itself is a blast!
