I had a performer RPM airgap with a Holley street avenger carb under my camaro B4 my new hood, I wouldn't think your hood would have any less clearance, i believe the air gap is a little taller than an rpm actually. I had to get a drop base K&N but it fit. I'm sure you wouldn't have any problems as long as you are willing to get the drop base filter

I have one with a edelbrock carb under my 84 Camaro hood with a duel inlet housing with room left.
Good luck,
Mike

What carb are you using? depending on the carb and the shape of the aircleaner you can actually gain power. May require some modification like removing the carb choke tower.

This "L-88", air cleaner base is what I use on my Firebird.
Use a Edelbrock 1/2" air cleaner spacer so it clears the carb fuel inlet fitting. (banjo fitting) if you're using a HEI you'll have to carve a flat on the back of the air cleaner base to clear the HEI cap.
Use a 14x 3" air filter.

You can get this L-88 air cleaner base from Noah performance.
PN is 2193b

If you want to use a holley the choke horn needs to be removed. the Edelbrock is fine as is.

noahhomepage

You can buy just the base itself and use most performance lids, or buy the complete aircleaner (lid and base)

Use Edelbrock#8093 1/2" spacer.
This set up allow the most possible hood clearence witout flow restriction. There is even enough room for a 1/2" nitrous plate. This air cleaner base hugs down around the carb. You probabily will need to rework the throttle cable bracket lower. I made a custom one from an old GM throttle cable bracket and some sheet metal a few scres and some welding.

Sorry The part number is 2193b. The 2195b is a generic base like the Moroso base. Not as nice or as low as the 2193b L'88 base.

Yes my hood is stock Fbird and the intake is a RPM airgap.
i've use both holley and Edelbrock carbs. This air cleaner base even fits a Qjet.

You need a certain amount of space between the top of the carb and the cleaner o/wise it screws up the air flow into the carb.

No you don;t loose power. That base was designed to support 560+hp (69L88 Zl1) no you don't need the SB one.

There is enough space. Holleys require removal of the taller choke horn.

ive got a performer edlebrock 600 carb....pn 1406... with the signature series air cleaner set up base... and i have a 1 1/2 or 2" universal k&n 14 in filter and the K&n extreme filter the one that acts like a lid /air cleaner i have a midrange weiand dual plane intake and about a half inch adapter underneath my carb i have no clearance problems.. i did for a lil while .. just the edge of the cleaner was rubbing one of the braces under my hood so i shaved that spot out of the brace and viola no clearance problems...

This is not a bolt on . it does not matter. The difference is the location of the PCV hose tube under neath. You'll probably need to remove it and cap the hole.
This part is from the 60's. You have to modify it to fit but it allows the most hood clearance and its specific shape is much more scienced out for max air flow than typical aftermarkets drop base air cleaners. buy which ever one you want. I use a BBC one on my SB. You don't have enough motor to max this one out.

I have the RPM Air Gap, Demon carb (mech secondaries), Edelbrock drop base filter housing, and a K&N 14 x 3 filter. Fits fine under Camaro hood. Also F Bird is right, when I had it on the chassis dyno I removed the whole air filter on the second pull and lost 1 hp at the wheels. Was kind of curious if it was a restriction but it's not.

for you that have camaros....I know that all kinds of intake carb air filter combos will fit...ON CAMAROS. A firebird has a completely different slope to the hood. I have a performer rpm on now with a 3 inch air cleaner and it sticks through the top of my hood atleast an inch. i cut a hole in a stock firebird hood for a temporay solution. So if you have a firebird and you are running an rpm under a formula hood or a stock hood your advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

There was no need to butcher your hood to fit an air cleaner. Just read my post(s) (I've posted on this many times) and pick up the phone and order the right parts and do the mods as discribed. Fits with room to spare with no butchering required. Noah Performance is just one of many places that sell these old GM muscle car era resto parts.

ohhh...don't worry I didn't butcher my formula hood...no way. I have a few 3rd gen firebirds for parts and i just took a base model hood off one of those cars and butchered it. And I still have the intentions of completing the cowl induction on that hood. But I want my formula hood on there for now because it matches the paint and it's a formula hood...they are sweet. When I go to have the car painted i'll probably get both hoods painted (the cowl hood and the formula hood) and if i want to swap them off everynow and then...then i can.
