I've not mounted my front license plate since buying my 90 GTA even though it had four holes in the air dam which I plugged with pop rivets and then spot painted them. Occasionally I get cited for not having it mounted and go through the process of rigging something that looks permanent enough to pass an inspection. I don't like frames of any kind and wondered if anyone has designes a simple, non visible bracket to hold the front plate.
Thanks for any input.

Make brackets that mount behind the bumper cover, mount plate to that. I myself having a damaged bumprer cover just screwed it into the passenger side area.
Where we live they dont really car about the plate...
I'm luckey to live where I do. here in ohio...more specifically stark county...they don't care about ANYTHING. cracked windsheilds, no exhaust or cat, front plate....nothing....even having all 4 tires....seriously. my buddy drove a 92 cavalier with only 3 tires....he was fine for 3 or 4 days until he drove into summit county....they laughed at him...then took his car...we had also heavily modified that car...cut the roof off, and took the trunk lid off and put a bench seat from an astro in there....just leave the plate off and move to ohio.
Ahhh, this is a big problem I had a while back. I have a 91 GTA. Right now, I'm stationed in Germany with the Air Force and it is mandatory to have a front plate here. When I was stationed in Delaware it wasn't mandatory to have one. I have no holes or frame on the nose of my GTA and sure as heck didn't want to put any in when I got to Germany. I rode around for a while with it in my window, but after getting told various times by gate guards to mount it, I had to rig something up. Basically all I did was make a holder out of sheet metal in an "L" shape. It was mounted way under the nose of the car where the holes would never be seen. I still had to drill holes but theres really no way of getting around that. It basically looked like this: |___
That simple. the vertical piece I cut to the exact size of the plate, then put 2small screws and nuts to hold it on. Put 2 more screws and nuts underneath the nose to mount it. It turned out great. It's not even toutching the tip of the nose. I put a piece of sticky-back foam between the back of the plate and the nose just in case it blows back a bit from wind. It looks just like it's hovering and it looks nice and permanent. (even though I can easily take it off and no one would ever know there was a plate there)
Here's some pics of the brackets I made. Bolts under the nose of the car using existing screws on the car. No drilling required. Takes 2 minutes to put on or take off.

You could move to wisconsin, no tickets up here. But there is a heck of a lot of snow
I got a warning from an over zealous policeman, so i had to mount mine with the original plate bracket. Seems like it depends on the officer at the time.
In Texas, we are also required to have a front plate and I have heard that if your car by law was manufactured without a front plate mounting location, then you do not have to have one. Is this true? I have looked it up but found nothing like that. I would love to stick a "camaro" front grill on my car but dont really see the point.

well according to that law it wouldn't matter for our cars lol
actually it would, as there are no lp mounting holes in the "camaro" grill or on my last 2 firebirds

Dude let me know if this is true
I been driving my 85 camaro with the grill and no front liscense plate for 8 months! Never gotten pull over for not having one in front, but for burn outs, dig outs, and etc.
i got pulled over for it yesterday actually, in AZ we only had the rear plate but WA requires a front, ive seen a loop hole to it tho!
Law says you need a front plate unless the car has no provision for it, so you just have to have it in plain sight from the front of the car. Ive got the camaro front grill and i didnt wanna ding it up so i just stuck it in my windshield but of course i got pulled over for it, its legal but you need "approval from state patrol" i gave up and just popped 2 holes in the grill and screwed it in, now heres the BS part i got pulled over today and got a verbal warning for "defacing the plate"....when i ran the screws in it formed around the grill so its got a slight bend in the middle lol yesterday it was city police that said state patrol has no say, today it was state patrol saying city police were wrong for making me mount it on the front because its destruction apparently and it never applied to me in the first place lol

Not true. Regardless of the manufacturers provision for a front plate or not, us Texas people still are required to have one.

Thirdgens are required to have front plates in WA. I have been pulled over 6+ times for no front plate in both my 90 Firebird and 91 GTA.
The RCW states:
"b) The Washington state patrol may grant exceptions to this subsection if the body construction of the vehicle makes compliance with this section impossible"
The WaSP has not granted an exception for Thirdgens.
Putting it in the windshield is not legal because it isn't "at the front" of the vehicle.
As far as bending the plate:
"Display a license plate or plates on any vehicle that have been changed, altered, or disfigured, or have become illegible;"
Unfortunately that falls under disfigured.
I figure in WA it a "Pay to Play" kinda thing. The car I commute with now has a front plate on it just because I don't want the hassle. None of my other Thirdgens have front plates on them.

i only had one on the rear in AZ, so much easier lol i figure im gonna get stopped for something once a month atleast, its just my luck lol i actually got pulled over for my exhaust setup, he told me it was too loud.....problem is ive got TES headers from edelbrock, 3 inch piping and a flowmaster 40 series muffler, its pretty quiet but he stopped me any way after i pointed out all my stuff is CARB legal he didnt really have much to say lol
i guess the cops in port orchard just hate third gens hahaha or secretly admire them and do it to see the car lol
You guys should come up here to Saskatchewan! When you register your car they won't even give you 2 plates. Just one for the back
When I was stationed at Cannon AFB and living in New Mexico it's the same thing. When you register your vehicle, they only give you one plate and one registration sticker. lol So that was pretty cool as I never needed to mount my front plate.
Just installed a hide away motorized plate bracket on my friends 2011 gt500. we live in TX and he refused to screw into his bumper cover and the car didnt come with a front plate mount. The thing works pretty good and slides under the front airdam when not needed. The manual one was $50 and the motorized one was $130

I would be interested in something like that, do you know where he got it from? Have any pics?

I to didnt want to drill into/ take off the camaro grill on my 87 IROCZ because i liked it so much so this is wat i did:
I took two strips of aluminum, bent them around the front lip of the spoiler. Drilled the four holes so i could mount the license plate to it and i also drilled four holes into the mount so i could bolt it up to the bottom of the car. My car is TPI so it has the scoop behind my fog lights so i drilled four holoes into that, bolted everything in and it looks great. And i have had no problems here living in NY.
Heres a pic:

.....figure out the placement...drill two holes.....quick trip to Home Depot for $3.00 worth of nuts and bolts......one beer
Total time 15 minutes. Just make sure the nuts have flat heads and the top bolts are self tightening so any vibration does not loosen the bolts (and the plate falls off while driving).

You drilled new holes? I mounted mine using existing bolts underneath.
(and yes....that is a spare nose sitting on my dining room chairs! )
