Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

With me I tend to go with K&N for all filtering needs...except in fuel...thats walbro for me.

I use K&N Gold Filter 4.6" height and 3.770" diameter.

I am looking into an oil filter relocation kit....tuck it away a little bit...and for easier access.

Also look into a FILTERMAG. I havent used one but heard they work just how they say...its a piece of magnet that goes around the filter to pull particles away from the oil...and out of your system....check it up on GOOGLE and Im sure theres pictures of the particles...I've seen some but dont remember where...maybe a summit mag.

fram filter suck, they have cardboard reinforcements. i use a kn filter for a chevy 350 truck, longer more filter surface. if you cant afford kn id use a wix filter. why would u need to change a filter location on a 350 they are in a easy location

When I get longtubes I want to relocate it....I have seen many pictures of Oil Filters right by the tubes...so I dont want it to get extremely hot and dont want any clearance issues. Stuff like that is why I want to relocate...but l8er...not right now.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

I only use K&N oil filters on my cars, along with mobil 1 oil.

You can use the same filter I use on my LT1. The K&N HP3002. It holds an extra 1/2 quart of oil and it has an anti-drainback valve (which the standard size K&N HP2002 oil filter doesn't have). Also at all of the stores that are around here that carry K&N oil filters, the hp3002 costs the same as the hp2002.

Comparison:

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

I use a K&N HP3002 on my Camaro, but not on any of my other cars. At over $10/each, I'm too cheap, but on the Camaro I only change the oil every other year (at most), so the $10 isn't killing me, plus the nut on the bottom of the filter makes my life WAY easier trying to get a filter off that's been on there for 2 years.

On everything else, AC-Delco PF35. For a while the PF35 filter changed and was a shorter, cheap filter, but then I started seeing the original big ones back on the shelves so I grabbed a half dozen of them. As far as I know though, the original big ones are still what's being sold.

Wix, Puroilater and Napa brand filters are also very good filters.

Just stay away from the Fram junk. Penzoil filters are Fram filters with a different paint job.

I only use NAPA filters. It's my understanding that NAPA filters are re-badged Wix filters. I've seen in many places that Wix is top notch next to maybe Amsoil.

I use a NAPA filter, the one for a 350 truck engine. It's bigger and has the antidrainback valve too, plus I get them for like $2.36.

AC Delco oil filters. # 35 and 454 are the smaller ones while 1218 is he larger. All AutoZones carry them. I make anyone who comes to autoZone with a chevy small block buy it. For the price and quality they can not be beat. If they weren't good they would not put them on the $60,000 Corvettes.

Just because GM engineers did it, doesn't always mean they are good? How would it look if they sold the car with a different manufacturer's part on it?

AC Delco PF1218 for me. My '85 Z28 goes through the traps at 7,000 rpm so I'd say the PF1218 is well suited for a daily driver.

My feeling is use any good brand, just change it and your oil every 3-4000 miles.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

Napa Gold all the way (Wix) Ive cut apart all kinds of filter and Napa/Wix have the best looking element. Fram is junk and if you get a "suregrip" filter its hard to get some oil filter wrenches to fit.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

I remember reading an article on oil filters about 10 yrs ago. It's been a long time, but I do remember that AC Delco, K&N, and Wix were by far the best and after reading the thread, I vowed never to use ANY FRAM! They are terrible, even their best filter sucks! I wish I would have saved that article for this thread!

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

I worked in a quick lube my first summer of college. I got really bored one day and cut all the filter brands open to check them out. Stick with OEM filters, WIX, Mobil, and K&N. Never ever ever Fram!!!! It's a can of garbage. OEM filters (AC and Motorcraft) have metal caps holding the filter element together inside. Fram's are held together with a rubber band. LOL

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

I've always run Delco,K&N,or Mobil 1 on my "fun stuff" (camaro and el camino)

On my 99 s10 with a 2.2L i'm running a fram it claims to have a 94% filter efficenty rating. And at 120hp in the bone stock truck i'm not turning 10 second 1/4's. So far no problems w/ Fram on the daily driver.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

I typically use an Amsoil EaO filter (uses synthetic nanofiber media from Donaldson and has a nice solid casing)

If I am not running one of those filters, it is either a Wix, Hastings, or Delco, nothing else.

I dont think it really maters. Only a couple companies makes oil filters and puts the name on what company ordered them.

Re: what is the best oil filter for a 1989 camaro?

i use the mobil 1 filter it has the highest burst rating on it and is the best in my opinion and in the opinion of my fellow co workers that have mustangs and camaros.... thats all we run on our vehicles and thats what i tell the customers at the parts house i work at... i have never had a problem from the mobil 1 filter and i change it every 3,000 miles....
