has anyone tried the new Thumpr cam by comp cams... i like the way they have a rough idle...in the summit catalog its part # CCA-12-600-8...would this cam work well with a 305?
I thought about using one in my 383 but decided to go with a new voodoo retrofit roller. Not because I dont think the thumpr wouldnt be good but for my setup I felt the voodoo was better suited. Yeah those retrofit lifters are expensive but less drag = more power and longer life. Your not gonna flatten a lobe on a roller cam as quick as a flat tappet. It all comes down to the old saying speed costs money......
By the looks of the numbers, I think it would do well in a 305 with a nice set of well ported heads, good intake and exhaust. Stock heads would need to be modified to accept that high of a lift, though. I wouldn't consider going above (or possibly even near) .450 lift without having the valve guides machined down.
I call BS on all of this, go with the Voodoo, or the Extreme energies series cams, buying a cam for the sound is nonsense; these 2 are the newest grinds of flat tapets and if you break them in correctly they should last for 150,000 miles. Skip the retrofit, skip the fancy sound and go for a real performance oriented camshaft. You won't regret it later on down the road. P.S. Use Rotella T if you have a flat tappet cam they depend on it.
Naaa, some folks like to cruise with that ratty lumpy idle and a pair of sweet pipes, but never really get on the gas that hard. With the driving record I have a lumpy cam with meager performance might be just the thing.
