Magnaflow 93456 Direct Fit Catalytic Converter - Highly Recommended!

If you need a new cat, I highly recomment going to Magnaflow and getting one of their direct fit converters. I bought the 93456 for my car for $90 because last year my car barely passed emissions. The only problem I had installing it was getting the stocker off, after that it went on without a hitch. The one I bought wasn't a flow through design but after putting it on the exhaust was at least 2x louder (but that was probably because the stocker was about gone). I just took my car for an emission today and it passed with flying colors. Last year my HC ppm in the 25/25 test was 120 of 120 and this year it was 27 of 120.

Is that with or without the AIR plug?

I have a V6 so the converter I bought had the thing there for the rubber hose but it was capped off.

I have that cat sitting at home waiting to be installed on my 91 GTA. Did you have to cut the stock cat off?

Re: Magnaflow 93456 Direct Fit Catalytic Converter - Highly Recommended!

About 3 months ago I bought a magnaflow high-flow cat from Summit. My old (stock) cat and exhaust were shot... my cat could be described as "crispy" at best. Since I went with the Dynomax Super Turbo and the Magnaflow cat at the same time I am not sure what the majority of the noise change can be attributed to, but the car sounds a whole lot louder and meaner (its the 3.1). I just passed PA emissions with flying colors. Anyways, I have only good things to say about Magnaflow's cats.

Re: Magnaflow 93456 Direct Fit Catalytic Converter - Highly Recommended!

Wish I'd read this a year or so ago. I bought a Catco that started rattling in six months, nasty rattle. Spent two hours getting it off without a BFH or sawzall so it wouldn't be damaged, sent it back to Summit. Took three weeks but they sent a new one, even refunded my shipping. Six months later and the new one did the same thing. Front cat. bed came loose, sounded like a brick in a cement mixer. Gave up and bought a Maremont. So far, so good. The 3 inch converters are sure expensive though. Beware the Catco.

Re: Magnaflow 93456 Direct Fit Catalytic Converter - Highly Recommended!

A while ago I purchased the Catco 4153 "direct fit" dual cat setup (equivalent to factory option N10) for my 1991 RS. Had it retrofitted into my car just over 6 months ago (along with headers and a 3-inch Flowmaster exhaust) and wouldn't you know it, BOTH cats now sound like a couple of coffee cans with gravel rolling around inside.

I have ordered two of the Magnaflows; I will post again later with results.

Put two of these on your dual cat system.

Had the same result with a single 3" Catco on my 89. Sent the first one back to Summit, sent me a new replacement and refunded my shipping. Three months later the replacement did the same thing. Whew. No complaint with Summit but sick of Catco. Went to the local parts store, bought a Maremont unversal, cut the ends off the Catco and welded them on the unversal. No problems since, two years ago.

Those are cool-looking, bet they'd be ideal for the tight space under the passenger footwell where the dual cats are. But the shop is already underway with the magnaflows.

Very intriguing though. If for some reason the magnaflows don't pan out, I will give those a try. Thanks for showing those to me.

The new cats have been in place for about two weeks now. Had a local machine shop weld them in. So far, so good. No more rattles, and the exhaust has a nice clean rumble. Very happy with the Magnaflow cats so far ......

Re: Magnaflow 93456 Direct Fit Catalytic Converter - Highly Recommended!

I replaced my dual cats with units from Random Technologies back in '02 and I haven't had any issues with quality or passing emissions in California. They were a bit pricey, though. IIRC, I think they were $169ish/each. Coincidently, right before I was replacing my engine and entire exhaust Car Craft did a comparison on quality and impact of catalytic converters. Their conclusion was that Random Tech cats were the best in both flow rate and in their effectiveness at removing emissions. I don't remember if they had Magnaflow cats in the comparison or not, but they sound like decent pieces.

Oh, my advice for removing the stock cats: Use a pneumatic hammer if you can get your hands on one. No power tools=pack a lunch, you're going to be there for a while.

I heard about it too. Looks like it renders great service for all 49 state magnaflow catalytic converters
