Car: 91 Z/28, 89 RS Race Car Engine: 305 stock / ZZ4 AFR 195 9.7:1 Transmission: T5 / t10 / Jerico Axle/Gears: 10blt w 3.42, 9 in w /3.80 DL | Mallory Unilite vs MSD 8570 cap size I need advise of those who have experience.
I run an old Mallory Unilite. I say old because I understand that the new ones are better and mine could not be worse. Its a piece and flew to pieces. It is now welded solid at full advance with the guts out. I am now still scared of the brass shaft that the rotor presses onto coming loose. I have not figured out how to weld brass to steel. I have welded the hold down clip. If you have seen one you know what I am talking about. If you havent its a nightmare. The whole unit is a POS.
I tried a regular MSD billet but it will not fit since the engine has been moved back. An old GM points dist will not fit either. That is the only reason why I run the mallary.
I now see MSD has a small base and cap dist #8570 and am trying to compare this to the mallory unit. Anyone eyeballed them side by side?
Also I see mallary now has a S/S Series 32 and 42 which claim to be a better piece than the unilite. I believe that this would fit no problem since it takes the same cap and rotor. Anyone have any comments on these as to their durability. They do look better in the picture books. | | | |
