i see shell here in canada is promoting Shell Rotella T motor oil any thoughts or comments on this stuff. i know a lot of engine builders like using it.
It's primarily formulated for the specific needs of a diesel engine, such as soot control. It's the choice of the majority of diesel owners who still use dino oil, and is used by many operators of simi trucks and fleet service companies. I use it in my Ford Super Duty with the 7.4 liter diesel, and have not had any issues with it. I have never thought of using it in a gasoline powered engine. Why are the builders suggesting it? Charles
Shell Rotella and Mobile Delo are the ONLY oils on the market that still carry the proper additives for a flat tappet cam. I've run the Rotella for years in most of my vehicles. My original L98 ran 150k miles on the Rotella T, when I dissassembled it, you could have ate off the inside of the motor. My 355 regularly turned 7600 on it(car is apart). My 180k burban is still on it.
It's weight works very well for the oil pressure levels I like. That of course comes down to the tolerances within your engine, but as I said, I like the stuff. Zero problems in over 15 years with it.
I use it in my 6.2L diesel suburban. It works very well.
It is SL rated, it still has plenty of Zn and P anti ware addtives.
Next oil change on my 1985 Z28 this oil is going in.
My Grandpa runs Rotella T in his 1985 Dodge Ram Truck. It has the straight six engine. The truck has almost 240,000 and the engine has never been rebuilt. He often pulls 10,000 lbs plus of antique tractors.(which is illegal in his truck) I am a witness of these pulls. This is the truck we used to haul my disabled Firebird after I got it.
I ran this oil in my 3.1 Firebird for about 3 oil changes. It seemed to run great and very smooth. I was told that Rotella T isn't very good for a brand new engine though, as it has something that can block oil to certain parts that haven't yet been broken in. Several old men told me this, and I have learned to listen to old men. Maybe I am wrong.
I have yet to put it in my car, but my Duramax (diesel 2500HD truck) has been running on it with no problems. I know of lots of bikes that run it (and they turn 15k rpm) both on and off the track.
I use it in my air tools too.
3.5'' DeWalt framing nailer, Craftsmen 6'' orbital sander, small craftsman air hammer, 1/2 drive impact. I use the sander the most by far and it still goes like new.
