I was in Home Depot the other day in the paint section and came upon a product I didn't know existed...a spray paint that is specifically for fabric. it says it can be used on all types of fabrics/materials (auto included). I was just wondering if anyonew has any experience with a fabric spray paint? Im concerned on how it comes out? does it leave residue (ex. if i were to get in the car wet from the rain would it run off on my clothes?) does it leave the fabric in the same condition before it was used (soft to the toch, etc? or does it 'harden' it up) anyone who has any experience with fabric spray paints please speak up..looking for any and all info on this product. thanks!

well i used dupli-color fabric spray on my hatch shade . just cleaned and dried well . turned out good , been a year now and still looks o.k. . tried it on floor mats and also pretty good on them . they are showing scuff signs now , but not to bad . i was happy with my results . don't know about HOME DEPOT stuff .

i used duplicolor on the seatd and headliner of my camaro and it came out nice. i even did it while everything was in the car. just make sure you mask what u dont want it on cause it will stick tho the platics too.

i know a guy who restores lead sleds and loves the stuff. the duplicolor is supposed to be good. I saw a roadmaster dripping with chrome that he did and the headliner was done in spots with the duplicolor. It looked great!

Does anyone have pics of their use of the duplicolor or homedepot product?

I used it on my carpet and it didnt last but maybe a week before it started to come off but i didnt use the primer because i figured it wouldnt matter because it was carpet and not plastic was i wrong?what did you guys do to get it to work so well?

i believe it was the duplicolor fabric dye i used about three years ago on my passenger seat. i've since upgraded to 4th gen cloth, but the thing looked brand new, including the vinyl siding. no reports of it coming off on passengers either, haha.

have been debating dying my current 4th gen seats black, seeing i had good results with the stuff, but i haven't yet.

I've never used it on fabric, but the Duplicolor stuff works great on plastics. Used it a few times on computer disc drives to change them from beige to black. It's really nice because it doesn't build up layers like regular paint. I can get pictures if you want me to.

any pictures that anyone can provide would be great. i wont be using it on vinyl and i see most infomration i can gather is how the results are on vinyl. im looking for info on how it comes out on fabric. i would be doing it on my very faded cloth seats.

anyone whos got before/after pics please post! i will probably go with duplicolor since the feedback seems positive. oh, i went to duplicolor's website and the product listed is for 'vinyl and fabric coating' -- is this the product you all are talking about (just want to be sure)

I used the Dup on my carpet. Worked great and saved me from buying a new one. I took it out and cleaned it at the car wash, let it dry and sprayed it. Sorry no before shots, but I did have this... one. You can see a small section of the carpet. The carpet felt a little stiff after I sprayed it. I just rubbed it a little with my hand and it felt like the original after that. That product could be used for a complete interior change or freshing up existing.

Spraying fabric will always leave it a little rougher and stiffer than is was originally. The type of fabric makes a huge difference though. For instance, for 3rd gens with fabric door panels; often the top is a fine cloth while the bottom is more of a carpet material. The carpeted part will take well with not too many coats (hint: spray a coat let dry 10 minutes. Brush the pile and spray from the opposite direction and repeat until even.). The top cloth part though will require 4-5 times as paint (depending on how much of a change in color you are going for) and will be noticably rougher to the touch afterwards. Materials like velour (for a seat for instance) will be as hard as a rock by the time enough paint has accumulated on the surface to give even looking results. Also, materials that are fully exposed to the sun will tend to fade back to their original color after a while. That being said, for light touch ups this stuff is great. When it comes to plastic, peeling is a real problem. Year One sells a variety of prep sprays to help the paint adhere but I've never tried them. I have had success with a thorough cleaning and a coat of self etching primer (intended for steel) to keep the paint on. Hope this is of some use. Jon

I used Duplicolor on my old Nova's armrests and door panels... stuff didn't last long. It easily scratched and flaked off.

Yea that stuff works miracles in my opinion. My dad swears my the stuff. He always uses to fix up old used cars with little money out of pocket

My brother used it on a car he was customizing, and it looked great. It did make the fabric a bit rougher though, but it wasn't so much that he couldn't live with it. He had it in the car for 5 years, and it never faded that I can remember. He changed from a gray/black interior to a gold/white interior. I plan on using it on the carpeting and headliner in my Camaro when I start working on the interior. The seats are in too bad of shape to be worth using on them and the door panels are going to be custom made since I am shaving off the door handles and locks and wont need the inside handle or lock buttons.

I used the stuff on the temporary seats in my 79 T/A. IMO it sucks. It made the seat fabric stiff/scratchy, and it wore off in a month. I only drove the car on the weekends.

I used it on my back seat. I had changed interior except fot bsck seat and it looked funny. Is stiffer, but hasnt faded or came off. Of course, noone sits back there. Also used on radio pod, looks good. It was dupli color, 3 or 4 bucks at walmart.

I tried the spray crap to cut corners and it looks/feels like crap. Not to mention that it wears off. If your wondering weather or not to use it then it's time for new carpet. You'll be WAY happier with new carpet. Besides new carpet doesn't cost that much.

I think it works great. Used it on my back seats, carpet, and headliner. Painted the plastics with Krylon fusion (?) for plastic. Changed from a gray to a black interior. Black hides a lot, not sure about the other colors. Seats took many coats to look even, carpet not as many. Just keep a can on hand to touch up from time to time. It will stiffen the fabric, so I am keeping my front seats gray. Still looks good IMO.

everyone has different experiences with this stuff...if you truly wanna do it then do it right and take your time and pull any panels out of the car that you can.
