Mr. Gasket says the purpose of a butterfly scoop is-- "Gives the competition look of fuel injection scoops, popular on today’s Top Fuel and Funny Cars."
Advantages are cold air, ram affect, and helps to block water from blowing in while cruising in the rain.
No real disadvantages, unless the mostly-closed butterflies increase pumping losses when cruising, thus hurting fuel economy. But if the scoop is open wider than the carb, shouldn't be a problem.
Biggest advantage is the look. Makes the car look tougher, and may make others think you've got a blower in there.
Personally, I prefer a plain open scoop. Or even better, in my opinion, an open cowl induction. No worries about scooping water in when driving in rain. Both are about equal as far as power goes.
